You should, I've run dos stuff no problem on my 700mhz P3 laptop so I don't think here should be an issue.
Most games not an issue. There are exceptions, PYROTECHNICA comes to mind, good game might look for. If you like Descent this is the trippy version. There is always DOS version MOSLO with mixed results. VGA should be fine. Going with SVGA maybe UNIVESA but with quirky results.

Almost wrote a REZ reference caption. DOS Free explore flyng sim in multiple enclosed blacklight rooms is the best way can describe. Ran too fast when I upgraded 486 to AMD 550mhz. Alas that PC is dead without a way to reflash the corrupted BIOS chip. For real torture I should try it on Wife's PC. DOS sound drivers don't work, one of these days if I get back into PC gaming may pop in the old 32AWE Sound Blaster.

I believe that Descent and X-Com can work without too much trouble on a Pentium. They got a release on a PC Gamer CD around 2000, and those versions at least ran fine.

I remember running into issues running Space Quest IV on my Pentium 100, though. The game was still playable, but the clock speed made some of the timed puzzles a LOT more difficult. I'm pretty sure that if my computer was any faster, it would have been impossible to escape the sequel police in the galaxy galleria.
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii

It's pretty much older 80s games that have issues with running too fast on newer hardware. As mentioned there are utilities to slow things down. Also I have a bundle (disc/leaflet) version of Magic Carpet 2 for trade if you're interested. :)

Speaking of old games, -warning a shameless plug- did anyone try the game I made with Klik & Play?
KNP was around since WIN 3.1. I think I made it when I had WIN98 SE. Still runs at normal speed on Wife's WINXP PC.

As Hobie mentioned, perhaps speed issues only apply to older DOS games.

EDIT
On a roll, General_Norrisanother game to look for - DOS CD game INFERNO.
