For that part of the game I used the silenced scoped rifle (like the VSS Vintorez from Stalker) while hiding in shadow. One shot to the head was enough to take out baddies and since you're hidden they can't really come after you. Of course you do need to act quickly, as they will eventually sweep towards you. One thing that also will make it easier is the night vision goggles you can get off one of the dudes at the beginning of that section. Remember to take out the lights as well, especially after you get those goggles. Continuously destroying the lights will make your life much easier.

As for knives, I never actually used the knife itself, though I'd suspect you need to be attacking from behind for an instant kill. I did nail a bandit once with a throwing knife in the back.

I used scoped weapons as much as possible in this game and tried for headshots. Even then, on the normal difficulty the enemies were bullet sponges, and bullets were scarce. I'd forget the melee/stealth stuff and try to attack from a distance (and then run away to a further distance if/when they follow). Of course, that strategy only works well against the human enemies...

I see what you mean. I'm constantly low on ammo. I don't know what I'm going to do when I eventually run out of ammo for real. Some of those humans were taking up to 5 shotgun shells at close range and still killing me. I had to go into the options to check that the difficulty level was still on normal...

Shotty is terrible for people. You're better off using the bayonette than the actual shotgun shell (and fyi, the bayonette is charged, so you hold melee for a second before you let loose for maximum power).

What's the bayonette or do you mean the knife? I have the steam version so I have no idea what weapons are.

I've started just using throwing knives for people, one shot kill and you can take your ammo back off of them. Seems to work really well. I'm screwed if they discover me though.

Tell us about the ending. Is it good, or just an afterthought?

No please don't I haven't completed it yet. This forum needs a spoiler tag.

I mean the literal bayonette that some shotties have on the end. You know, the knife on the front of the gun for melee attacks.

Ohh. I don't think I have a shotgun that has a knife on the end yet. I'm think I shouldn't have used my military rounds to buy dirty rounds and simply gone for a higher quality weapon from the shop instead...

You might be able to find a shotgun with a bayonette on it, especially since the game doesn't have durability.
