Xbox Softmod problem

Post by MikeyW »

Hey guys, I seriously need some advice here as this whole thing is driving me bonkers.

Basically I got an original Xbox for £15 about a month ago with the intention of softmodding it. So two days ago the Xbox to USB cable I ordered from ebay came through the post and since I had been reading about softmodding quite a bit prior to this, I thought the whole process would be easy.

So I installed the Xbox update from my copy of Halo 2 and proceeded to attach the numerous USB sticks I have to the Xbox. Some of them it deemed damaged, some of them were erased just fine as expected. However, after installing the latest version of the Action Replay software from the code junkies website as well as installing xbox memory card drivers for the USB sticks that worked, I found that the AR software simply wouldn't recognise the sticks even if my computer showed them on the device manager as Xbox memory card devices.

Since I was using Windows 7, I thought it might be worth trying in on one of the two XP running laptops I have here. However I got the exact same problem with those. I then tried explorer360, which also didn't work on any of these computers.

I used 4 USB flash drives as well as trying a camera SD card and 3 old MP3 players. I've looked on google for ages as well as this site and it does seem that many people have the same problem as me, but with no solution given. I was hoping that maybe this had happened to someone on here and that they could help me out or perhaps identify a minor step I might have left out.

Cheers.

i could never get flash drives to work.i used a controller and memory card as a flash drive. i cut the end off a breakaway cable and attached a male usb to plug into the computer, put the stuff on there, and plugged the controller/memory card back up to the xbox with new breakaway cable and ran the exploit through splinter cell.

I second that. I just bought a cheapo extension cable at a pawn shop ($0.25), and made my own controller to USB cable. With that, I plugged in a memory unit, and plugged the controller into my comp, and it detected the memeory unit.

I used MechAssault for my exploit, worked wonders for me.

Yep. Cheap breakaway cable with soldered USB end to use a controller w/ Memory Card is how I did mine too. I used 007 Agent Under Fire however!

I did the same, plugged my xbox memory card into my controller, plugged the controller into the xbox-USB cable and then that into the PC. Action Replay recognised it straight away as a memory card device and I copied my exploit save over the memory card. Easy as pie.

The version 6 revision of the console wouldn't accept USB even with a spliced cable. perhaps that's the issue?

Thanks for the advice. I've been shying away from having to buy another controller plus memory card as I'd really not want to have to spend more on soft modding the xbox than I spent on the xbox itself as it's not a particular favourite of mine or anything.

However, as you guys reckon using the controller and memory card to PC method is the best way, I'll keep an eye open for the bits I'll need in second hand shops etc. as ebay prices are out of my budget for this.

Also, I've read that as my xbox has the latest update, it won't accept non-official memory cards. Is this correct?

Version 6 revision of xbox meaning Xbox v1.6? My 2 v1.6 xbox had no problem with the usb cable from Playasia. As for thumbdrive, the one I got working was a very old 32MB stick. Maybe you should keep your eyes opened for those very small capacity thumbdrives on freecycle?

I don't remember xbox locking out unofficial memory cards, are you mixing it up with the 360? As long as your update is from Halo 2 disc, xbox usb cable + thumbdrives should still work fine.

If you are really not wanting to spend any money, you could readup more on hotswap method. But that method has more risk if you do not know what you are doing. The exploit method is in comparison fairly idiot proof.

I have whatever version is installed from the Halo 2 disc. I was under the impression that it was the latest. As the main problem I'm having is the Action Replay software I think you're right in saying that this update has no effect on the flash drives. I just remember reading somewhere that the update makes unofficial memory cards unusable. However, if this is only applies to the 360 then it's my misunderstanding.

I'll have another crack with a smaller flash drive if I see one knocking about, thanks.

Some people have reported better success with the Xplorer360 program, you may wish to try that instead.

Just some additional info to the previous post, my thumbdrive is manufactured by Netac. Might be helpful to those looking for compatible thumbdrives.
