Freezing when PS2 tries to access HDD

Post by Ducky »

Hi there,

I'm hoping somebody can help me with a problem I'm having. I have a PS2 (model 30002 R) with a FMCB'd Memory Card and a 160GB Samsung Spinpoint SP1604N IDE plugged into the Network Adaptor. When I plugged it in and loaded HDLoader for the first time, everything was working fine. It accepted it and formatted it in seconds. Winhiip didn't like the format when I put it into my PC so I reformatted it and put about 10 games onto it. Since then the PS2 always hangs when it tries to access the HDD (ie in HDLoader, ULaunchElf, OPL). I've tried unformatting it to get HDLoader to do it but it's still freezing at the splash screen. I've tried reading up on it online, but to no avail.

Does anybody have any solutions?

Cheers,
Hugh

Simply reformat it as one of any PC formats inside of any PC HDD utlity like SwissKnife and then just tell it to format the HDD with a quick format to NTFS or Fat32.

I've tried this before with Vista's own Disk Management, but that didn't help. Could it have been because it was simply a quick format? I'll try again without a quick format for the sake of it and update this post. :D

Could there be some setting saved in the Memory Card that could be the culprit?

hiya Ducky , i have a PS2 NA with the exact same problem.....ie it freezes on the HDloader loading screen. Imo the NA is broken , i have 12 more NA's that work like a dream so its not my HDDs or PS2s that is the problem.

In your case it may be a busted PS2 NA or something small hopefully.......

Goto this site and see if your HDD is compatible

http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list

Also your settings in building HDloader could be the culprit , try and find someone who has a good build to use.

I have a pack i got from another site where it specilizes in Antifreeze if you PM me your email i will send it to you.

Check you PS2 NA for the ' Date Code ' its on a sticker on the NA.......Model 2C from memory are problematic

Mod_Man_Extreme, I tried formatting it but it's still hanging whenever trying to access the HDD. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hey, s8n. You can email me via the icon under my avatar. I'd really appreciate that, thanks.
I made sure my HDD was supported on that list before buying it. Also, I didn't make my own HDLoader. I used one that came with the FMCB pack.
Also, my Network Adapter's date code is 2D. Is that fine? I'd be incredibly disappointed if I were to find my Adapter didn't work. If it comes to it, would you perhaps mind selling me one of your many Network Adaptors? :D

I have used 4 different NAs and the same number of hard drives. Didn't have an issue with any of them. Personally, I haven't found a hard drive that I bought to not work.

I did have a problem once with the PS2 freezing when trying to load a game from the HDD. To make a long story short, I took it out and did a low level format (not quick format) in WIndows. It was chugging along and somewhere around 40%, it found a boat load of bad sectors. I tried to do the mark bad sector and move on option. After letting it run for 24 hours and finding that it only advanced 1%, I gave up and tossed the drive in the garbage. This drive came with a PS2 that someone sold me. I guess it got damaged during shipping. I replaced it with a different drive and had no issues since.

hi Ducky , i tried emailing you under your Avatar and there is no option to send files along with it.

The date code of your NA is perfect btw

I prefer to not sell any of my NA's but i can show you where i get mine from.

I have a bunch of HDloaders zipped ready to send for you to try out , but i have no way yet on how to get them to you. If you figure something out buzz me

Just upload them to a free file hosting service such as megaupload.com.

One can also find NAs at Gamestop for $15. Do a search at the website to see if your local store has one and then call the store to confirm.

Why do you have a bunch of different HDLoaders? I just have the 8.3C version that I got from skapps.com. There are other versions there but I haven't had any issues yet with 8.3C. Can you explain why you have different ones and what problems you have encountered in the past?

It seems I've gone from one problem to another :D

ULaunchElf wasn't recognizing the USB (tested this on two PS2s) for me to test the other HDLoaders that s8n provided so I decided to FTP them in ULaunchElf.
For some reason it was freezing when I tried it over the Network Adapter. However, when I tried to do it with my brother's slim PS2, it was fine. No freezing.
I'm starting to think the Network Adapter is the culprit but I'm confused as to why it would stop now since it worked when I first got it.

I'm going to try and use a fresh ULaunchElf to see if I can eliminate any problems by doing that. (EDIT: New ULaunchElf fixed USB problem but not HDD problem)

gtmtnbiker, unfortunately I don't live in the USA. Unless somebody's willing to buy, test and ship one to me then I'll have to rule out GameStop as an option.

Supposedly there's one at a store not too far from me. I could do this for you if you're interested. I did this for emu_kidid (australia) about a month ago.
