Maybe I'm goign to be blasted down for this, but I've really enjoyed the minor resurgence of adventure style games on DS and Wii. Games like Phoenix Wright, Another Code, Another Code R, Hotel Dusk, Homestar Runner and possibly even Zack & Wiki have proved really fun and work well with the controls. Also ports like Sam and Max and the new monkey island downloads. Im not a HUGE fan of the old fashioned point n click games, I often felt that whilst they were hilarious, their solutions were too surreal and involved too much trial and error to be fun. As for being able to permanently screw up and never be able to finish the game without the game even telling you, like in early sierra games, I was definetely not a fan.

No you won't because most people agree the DS was a perfect handheld for adventure gaming. It's just that only a handful of developers knew how to take advantage of the platform, most notably Cing and Level-5 of course. The rest were just ports of PC titles or graphic/visual novels.

I really think that Adventure Game companies should spend more time designing the puzzles. Finding ways to make them a TRUE part of the story not tacked on, they should be logical but require thinking, and most of all a kind of hint system, that doesn't tell you what to do or how to solve a problem but to push you in the right direction.

For example in a murder adventure game you are pushed by NPCs to take fingerprints, think of motives ect, and then you piece them together to find the killer.

Also more dialogue puzzles, but with consequences so it's actually about saying the right thing, and not trying everything until the answer pops up

I love AGs. One of my first games was Torin's Passage for the PC. I also like the Phoenix Wright games, and Trace Memory/Another Code (though I didn't beat it yet because it won't register some things as being picked up). I bought Indigo Prophecy during the steam sale.

We should do a P&C essentials article.

It's just my humble opinion, but I think apart from the acting the whole Ripper game has dated pretty badly. Navigation is a pain, and the story isn't as branching as I thought it would have been. I also cringe audibly whenever I enter the 'cyberspace'.

Oh no you are right, Ripper is a terrible game apart from the cast and soundtrack. The list was a joke, sorry what shade of blue are we using for sarcasm nowadays?

P&C Essentials that are still kick ass today

. Monkey Island 1, 2, 3 (Also remake of number 1 as well as number 2 on its way)
. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
. Broken Sword 1 & 2
. The Dig
. Full Throttle
. Sam & Max: Hit the Road
. Day of the Tentacle
. Beneath a Steel Sky
. Blade Runner
. Kings Quest I,II,III (Fan Remakes), V, VI
. Leisure Suit Larry 5, Leisure Suit Larry 6, Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!
. Runaway 1, 2, 3
. The Longest Journey
. Space Quest IV
. Quest For Glory 1

While I found the Sam & Max games by Telltale a bit of a let down the Monkey Island Tales series is great, the first two chapters are a little slow but from there on its old school Monkey Island.

Wasn't there a study that concluded 40% of meaning is lost through textual communication?

@emwearz Good list but I think generally any AG well-received many years ago is still likely worthy of playing. Also, I found Runaway to have one of the most annoying main characters ever. The intro alone turned me off. I didn't care for him or his girlfriend.

This is true with any game, if it sucked on release it will only suck more with aged graphics and sound. Many games that were released to high praise are fairly unplayable today, I find many of Sierra's adventure games too frustrating to play with death scenes and dead ends, maniac mansion is pretty ugly on the eyes / is too wide spread in item collection, the first indy game is fairly boring today but I loved it back in the day, and so on.

The Runaway is slow, but its puzzles are quite hard. I liked all three of them.
