I think Evangelion had a big problem in that they clearly stopped trying/ran out of money/all took too much cocaine about 2/3 of the way through the series

No, it was only the last two episodes that were like that and both were rendered obsolete by the movies anyhow.

Also, fun fact. You can literally blame SEGA for killing those two episodes too as they became increasingly concerned about the growing violence and psychological disturbances with characters later on in the series and pulled almost all their funding. Later on they brought back their funding full force for the movies though and that's part of the reason for their logo flashing on screen before the movies start.
