You know I've actually played Mario Kart Double Dash in LAN mode in the room with another Gamecube and a network switch connecting both cubes.
It was fun, ran silky smooth and while random characters was annoying at first later it just made everything more fun as we got to try beating each other with characters we never used normally.
I can't see the video you linked (My wi-fi is at a crawl lately) but it looks like you liked the Japanese game based on the comments. Japanese games tend to have a lot of glitches and crap in LAN modes as those are generally considered throwaway bonuses when compared to the US market. In America LAN-Parties and multiple TV's/Monitors in a single room are far more common so the LAN/Online part of the product is usually more refined by the time it comes out here.
Ah, sorry, I didn't see you had responded til now. Not trying to beat a dead horse or anything. If you played it and had fun that's great. In my eyes it isn't at all worth the cost though. I had a friend who loved to play Double Dash with his older brother back in High School. They each went through the trouble of getting everything they needed to play the linked mode so next time they saw each other they could play and I distinctly remember him telling me afterward about how much he hated it. They were extremely attached to their characters though, so that may have been part of their issue.
I haven't heard anything about the LAN mode being improved when it came to America and I dunno if what you said about LAN in Japan is necessarily the case. I just haven't been able to find anything on the subject.
And that wasn't me in the video (if that's what you're implying

), just some dude. His had the best explanation and demonstration of the mode I saw, so I linked it.
