My 2GB Micro SD from Kingston Japan stopped working...

Post by Ivo »

They have lifetime warranty but being in Europe I guess I'm out of luck. I can't get the thing recognized anywhere to try and format it :(

I got it from Dealextreme years ago, but it is actually a genuine Kingston (I checked the serial number). I wonder if I can send it to DX and have them replace it.

Meh, give Kingston a call anyway. From all the experience I've had with them they're world class about getting stuff fixed regardless of region.

What key lock? I think only the SD adapter has a "LOCK" mode, not the micro SD?

THose micro sd cards can be very fragile.
I lightly scratched one by mistake picking it up on the desk and it stopped working. Threw it away sigh.

Mine started behaving strange inside something whenever I accessed a specific folder.
I connected it to the PC, backed up every other folder, then went inside the folder and backed up everything except 2 files (whenever I tried those the card would stop being recognized, but I could remove and insert it again and it would be recognized again).

I thought of formatting it at that stage but wanted to try something else first. Maybe it would have gone differently had I formatted. I had Vista "scan and fix" the thing, didn't find any problems.

Then I deleted those 2 files and the whole folder, tried to move in working copies of those 2 files that I had on the PC, and the thing froze in transfer. Then it stopped being recognized at all.

Thanks for the suggestion, M_M_E!

I just phoned the UK customer service and they gave me an e-mail where I can contact them (through the web form I could not proceed as the part number was not recognized unless I selected Japan as the region).

The c.s. operator told me it was better to deal with them here in Europe so I'm hopeful and will e-mail them with a photo showing the serial and such as she recommended. I'm bound to have to at least pay postage to Spain or the U.K. I guess, but a new 2GB card would cost around 7 Euros I guess and the postage won't cost as much for something so light.

I needed to wait some days (my fault, not Kingston's) as I did not have a digital camera. I sent them a proper picture of the card with serial number etc during the weekend, and they issued the RMA today.

I'll see if I send the card out tomorrow, but so far I'm really happy with them.
