I appreciate all the feedback guys! I feel like I can actually achieve this goal now.
MrPopo - Your comment definitely helps put thing more in perspective.
I think I want to work on a shmup or a beat-em-up for my first game. I'd actually like to try and combine the two genres. Right now I'm just in the brainstorming phase, but I think I might mess around with the program a bit and see what I can come up with.
Should I even bother?

I hate you. There wasn't even a programming class in either of my High Schools. The best we had: A course on how to us Microsoft Office.
If there were programming classes in schools in my area I would've actually gotten good grades. /jealousy

What about making a game with the Beats of Rage engine?

It wasn't offered by my junior high; I spent several summers going to colleges to take summer courses on programming.

Oh, well I still hate you.

Re: Should I even bother?
I co-wrote a 2D shmup once with a bunch of code nerds back in 2002 and it was a pain in the arse to finish (we used DirectX I believe). Naturally my actual input my minimal but without my involvement the project would have been little more than a tech demo
I would have posted some snapshots but the disc housing my school projects is beyond readable at this point.
All I have to say is that I'm glad I'm done with any form of game development

Re: Should I even bother?
When I was at school I learnt Visual basic
In my first year at college I learnt yet more visual basic.
and in my second year of college we used C++
A few years pass and at the beginning of last year I re-taught myself c++
Then at the end of last year I Started to teach myself C# and how to use the XNA framework.
I now have 1 game on the XBLIG market, and 2 games fairly near completion.
Ive found XNA to be really easy to use and I recommend it but it is not my first introduction to programing so I dont know how easy it would be for someone thats never programed to use.
