Starship troopers was one of those movies where I couldn't understand how it spawned such a massive following years after its release with direct to dvd (and tv I think) sequels. . . kind of like how American Pie somehow became a brand.
It was an ok way to blow 2 hours, but not the type of movie I'd be compelled to watch a second time.

Starship Troopers would be better if it wasn't called Starship Troopers.

Well ST was decent I figure, or at most marginally better than decent. Maybe I feel that way because the film had major potential given the source material. I still don't know why Verhoeven did not go for the powered armor as depicted in the book. That would have been sweet. I mean it is partly because of Starship Troopers (the book mind you) that we have Gundam and all the mech related media, whose creators often cited the book as an influence.
Re: 15 Movies The Critics Got Wrong
I see the movie as more of a cynical reaction to the book than an adaptation. I think this actually was a very good choice, though. I don't think that the more interesting aspects of the book would adapt very well to film. The book wasn't really about the battles and death-dealing gorilla suits. Those were just set pieces for exposition on government and the military.bladerunner wrote:Well ST was decent I figure, or at most marginally better than decent. I think that the stuff about the armor would have only been distracting and awkward in the satirical comedy that Neumeier and Verhoeven were making. Between Starship Troopers and Robocop, it looks to me like their ideology is pretty different from Heinlein's.

It seems many people didn't 'get' Starship Troopers.. As a teenager I found it gory and redundant (Why don't they just blast them from orbit etc) but rewatching it as an adult was a completely different experience

Starship Troopers is awesome.
A movie that some people seem to dislike that I love is Event Horizon. I do not see how anyone can not like that film. Creepy as fuck.

I though it was cool, then it falls apart at the end. When he comes back it just goes silly. Soundtrack is awesome all the way through though.Octopod wrote:A movie that some people seem to dislike that I love is Event Horizon. I do not see how anyone can not like that film. Creepy as fuck.

I hated Starship Troopers because they seemed to glorify militarism and propaganda. If they were trying to satirize it, they did a very poor job.
Also, they showed us the wrong girls tits.

Were you really young when you saw it? I didn't know that The Princess Bride was a comedy when I watched it as a child.Hatta wrote:I hated Starship Troopers because they seemed to glorify militarism and propaganda. If they were trying to satirize it, they did a very poor job.
I know you're smart because you've beaten nethack, but I thought the satire in Starship Troopers was pretty clear.
The book, however, really did glorify militarism.

The book did NOT glorify militarism. Hell, the book clearly states that only about 10% of the public service jobs one can take to gain citizenship is the military. And active members of the military cannot vote.Limewater wrote:The book, however, really did glorify militarism.
