TV is pissing me off
TV is pissing me off
I've got a Samsung CRT, flat screen. I think it's a 27 inch and is HD. However, whenever I hook up a system that doesn't use at least component (RYWBG), the image runs off the sides of the TV by at least an inch. There are no options to adjust or resize the screen. It's to the point where I don't even want to play any games on it, it makes me so mad. For example, if there's a health bar or some similar information on the bottom or side of the screen, it will be partially, or completely cut off the screen. What causes this?

If so this is called overscan and is there to protect the life of your tube, dialing back your overscan settings will only serve to make the hidden scanlines produced by a 1080p signal visible to your naked eye and is a much worse option than dealing with one inch of lost real estate.
Most HD-CRT's 4:3 or 16:9 have some form of purposeful overscan for non component signals as well thanks to Composite and S-Video being relatively low quality in current terms and not being able to guarantee that the correct fill ratio or screen alignment can be achieved automatically each time.
Samsung and JVC are both notorious for this with their HD-CRT sets and other than screwing up the nice and sharp picture quality there's really no way for your set to gain back a non-existent inch of space that your TV's software over-corrected for.

Re: TV is pissing me off
Model number of your Samsung? Very likely you will have to adjust the Vertical - Horizontal potentiometers.
BE CAREFUL HIGH VOLTAGE EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED!
If there are no access holes in the back then the back cover would have to be removed.
Mark a baseline, in case the pic gets worse, go in small increments.
Could end up wiping out the component connection alignment, test and retest.
Here is a sample pic of a set of potentiometers, to give you an idea.
Be sure to use plastic screwdrivers to avoid a short.

I'd normally agree, but he's saying it only happens when he's using Composite or S-Video connections leading to the conclusion that it's caused by the TV's video processor/software, not the tube or potentiometers.CRTGAMER wrote:Model number of your Samsung? Beat me to the punch, Edited that in as a precaution above same time you posted. Perhaps a happy medium between the different video connections by adjusting those pots. Too bad CRT TVs don't have easy controls like a VGA monitor, compensating for different resolutions and video connections.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:I'd normally agree, but he's saying it only happens when he's using Composite or S-Video connections leading to the conclusion that it's caused by the TV's video processor/software, not the tube or potentiometers.

Re: TV is pissing me off
To be clear, the picture runs off the screen when using just RCA (RYW) connections. The TV has various inputs and all three AV channels make the games run off the sides. If I use an RF, everything fits perfect, but it's an RF, blah.
I'm about to just give up and buy a proper bubble TV since I have too many systems for that TV. Saw a few CRT's at Good Will for $20 today.
Thanks for the info on adjusting the screen size, I didn't know that's how they work. Interesting. The TV is not a wide screen.

If you get a Standard Definition TV go for a Sony Trinitron. These were THE reference CRT for professionals and high end videophiles in their day and it still shows as mine makes even the crappiest quality stuff look amazing.Replica wrote:To be clear, the picture runs off the screen when using just RCA (RYW) connections. In particular their Wega (Pronounced, Vega) and later FD Trinitron Wega (FD sets were flat screen CRT's and are available in either HD or SD variants) are still THE top of the line CRT's ever produced and are still used by major studios, video editors, graphic artists and all sorts of pros to do their work with.
Plus now that SDTV's are on the way out these can be found for a pittance of their original $600-$2,000 price at goodwill's and on Craigslist.

Maybe give those FREE adjustments a go, better then buying one. If that doesn't work, you can always haul in that replacement from Goodwill. Agree with Modman have a Sony WEGA HD CRT 4:3 myself. I hope this TV outlives me. Reviewed at my CRTV vs LCD signature link.

The problem is he has an HD-CRT. It's nothing like adjusting an SD-CRT.CRTGAMER wrote:Maybe give those FREE adjustments a go, better then buying one. By screwing with his settings he will make his scanlines visible and thus destroy the picture on his set. You're talking to someone who did it and almost wrecked his CRT by only moving the picture the maximum amount allotted (1/4'') on my set and all hell broke loose. These HD-CRT's are 100% computer controlled and actually rely very little on hardware itself for calibration. The best thing for him to do is go into his service menu and adjust his software overscan on composite inputs while he's got a game going to measure how much to bring the picture in by.
Also as he's got an HD Samsung there's an 80% chance it's a slimfit and given the track record of these TV's moving any hardware setting can cause the tube to simply wink out and die. It's not as simple and the regular straight shot tubes or older fixed resolution SDTV CRT's it's all become a software game now.

Re: TV is pissing me off
Yeah, there isn't a good show on 6 days out of the week.
Wait!
Ah, it's a thread about tv repair. Cool. Well, I also have a tv issue.
I've got an RCA, model 24V511T. 2005, CRT.
I'd hate to toss it, but my picture looks something like this:

I'm getting these crazy white lines on the screen (and no, the solution is to not sniff them off).
Any ideas?
