When the first Weekend at Bernie's came out, I really enjoyed it. I can remember laughing at it hysterically. I recently watched it again after 20+ years and I didn't find the movie funny at all. There was one scene that I laughed at but the rest of the movie was pretty bad.

I guess my sense of humor changed as I got older. But another movie "Dumb and Dumber" was released roughly around that time (1994 versus 1989) but I still find it extremely funny today. So perhaps the critics were right with Weekend at Bernie's?
Well I admit I prefer the sequel to the original as the 'rewatchability' factor is quite high. Neither deserves to be on any bottom 10/100/1000 lists, however!

i really don't understand why the critics hated this movie. i found it to be excellent. it had plenty of action, stayed quite close to the story, i loved the look, and unlike some films during the time it came out and films today, it actually had a length to it.

Just something I've noticed, but it seems trendy to hate the Wachowski brothers these days. Nothing they put out seems to get a good response since the original Matrix, except maybe the V for Vendetta movie, but some people hated that too

Some of those movies are just great because they're so bad (see HUDSON HAWK) but they also list movies that have no merit and aren't worth the time to watch them (see THE SPIRIT).

I will stand on my statement that I think The Last Samurai is the most underrated film ever made, and the last good Cruise film before he gone insane.

Knight and Day looks pretty fun. I lump Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson together; fantastic on screen, but when they start talking outside of a movie it all goes downhill.

I refuse to pay money to see any Tom Cruise movie. He takes a big cut of all his movies' gross and funnels it into his loony cult.

Does anyone ever wonder if scientology actually blackmails celebrities? I think maybe they got evidence that he was gay and threatened to out him if he didn't start ranting about scientology everywhere.

I'm not sure I've noticed that.

For what it's worth, I really liked "The Matrix" and "Speed Racer." "V for Vendetta" was good for about the first hour, but the second hour was terrible enough to destroy any goodwill I had toward the film. It was, however, better than Avatar.

Gamerforlife, I am glad to see someone else liked Superman Returns, because I did. Great film.

Anyway, here is my list:

Cutthroat Island
Image

(No Metacritic score) Rotten Tomatoes: 47; My Score: 60

The Phantom
Image
(Again no Metacritic score) RT: 42; My Score: 75
I LOVE this movie. Yes it is campy, but that is what makes it great!

The Shadow
Image
RT: 32; My Score: 75
Another film I loved and still do. Maybe Sam Raimi will get a crack at it yet!

Starship Troopers
Image
Metacritic: 51; My Score: 65
A competent film which deals well with depicting WWII era propaganda in a sci-fi film.

Again, these are my opinions and you are free to disagree.
