Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World

Post by JC48573 »

well, I just got this game like a day ago, but I want to know how people feel about this game. I have already put like 4 hours into the game and I think it plays a little different with the monsters fighting beside you. I guess I can't tell whether the game is considered as a mothership or an escort title. Is the game worth the 25 dollars I spent? I can probably put the 25 dollars towards Metroid, Birth by Sleep, or Blazblue Continum Shift. Should I spend a bit more time with the game before I can decide or can I simply skip it? I have played basically all of the Tales games that have been released in the US so far.

The Tales games really need financial support right now; the studio is on the brink of bankruptcy. As a huge fan of the series, I would obviously say to hang onto that game like grim death, as it is the only good remaining Japanese action RPG series in the world [now that the Star Ocean series is over], so cherish the game while you can. DotNW is now a flagship title; it is a spin-off game of Tales of Symphonia, but it's a good game, nonetheless. It's definitely something new to the series, and livens up the combat a bit more, despite the fact that it was not well-received by critics. While I am more anxious about the possible localization of Tales of Graces and Tales of Vesperia: Complete, this is still a good game, and should not be overlooked by fans of ARPGs [Action RPGs].

Buying games used doesn't help the developers out at all as they get no revenue from the game.

Well, no, I guess not, but I'm just saying they're in a rather dire situation. It's a real shame; with the quality of games they make, and the niche they fill, they should be easily turning a profit. But instead, they're about $21,000,000 in debt. I think one of their biggest problems is that they never advertise their games outside of Japan. Try looking on Youtube for an English advertisement for a Tales game; you won't find one. In fact, it almost seems like they intentionally keep quiet about their games until just before release. That's probably just the cynic in me talking, but if you look at their history, it starts took look that way. Someone needs to go give Namdai's [Namdai= Truncation of Namco + Bandai] localization team a slap upside that head, and tell them the RPGs sell just fine outside Japan. Look at Nippon Ichi; they've been localizing games that other companies would consider way too risky for years, and they're doing quite well!

So the main problem I've had so far with the game is there isn't a "Stay back and heal" option for your party members, which I've always used in Tales games (and Star Ocean). This means that in many battles I've found that sometimes I need to spam items as my healers are all dying. Aside from that, it's just not as compelling as Symphonia. That's not to say it's bad, it just doesn't have that same spark. Also, the voice actor for Emil is pretty fail.

Not quite.

A better example would be Atlus, who has a series that is popular in Japan (SMT) like Tales is and have seen success with bringing over niche titles (SMT included) and marketing them well to the right demographic.

When you buy a game you have the expectation that you'll be able to sell it again. Would you pay 50 USD for a game you could never resell? That option makes a person willing to experiment and take a risk on buying a game at full price. Buying used helps the developer, just in a very indirect way.

Once you've begun an rpg, it is hard to stop. There will always be that moment where you will eventually end up liking it for whatever reason or excuse you may have and I don't think it has anything to do with fanboyism. Ok, I actually like the monster hunting aspect of this game a lot and I like how Marta keeps on teasing at the good for nothing Emil from time to time. Tenabie (even I can't spell its name) can seriously get me on the laughing side sometimes with his absurdness. well, I've played bad rpgs up to the point where I will return it back to gamestop immediately, but this one is not really one of them. To tell you the truth, the game kinda falls under the love and hate category but maybe is more on the love side just to be safe. I was actually surprised that they used mocap for this game, which is a first for the series (was vesperia mocap as well?). There is just this special charm behind the Tales series so it would seem wrong to miss any of them just cause so and so said so.

I don't know about you guys but this game sort of reminds me of the couples from Condor Heroes. The main guy is also dumb like Emil and the female protagonist is smart and likes to tease the main guy just like Marta.
