15 Movies The Critics Got Wrong

Post by Pulsar_t »

I was debating whether to post this in the movies topic but I reckoned it'd lose focus too quickly. This list coming from Metacritic is brilliant because they admit the Metascore system is far from perfect. I tend to trust movie critics more than game reviewers because there's generally more leeway and less hype (read: $$$) involved.

The only movies I can think of right now that were universally panned yet loved by this humble homo sapien are Weekend At Bernie's 1&2, whilst I cringe at the maltreatment of Bernie Lomax's corpse the movies have so much cheese/campiness/silliness I regard them as timeless comedy classics.

I see "But I'm a Cheerleader" on that list. That movie was pretty awesome.

So was Predator and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Speed Racer. Loved that movie. And the Wii game

I'll have to add Kick Ass. Ebert gave it zero stars (which he never does) and described it as the downfall of cinema, or some such insult.

Honestly, I consider Billy Madison to be Adam Sandler's best film, but Happy Gilmore is definitely up there. A lot of titles on that list surprised me though. Predator, Happy Gilmore, Hudson Hawk, just to name a few, were all films I enjoyed.

And who in the Hell doesn't like Clue?!?!?! Tim Curry is bloody amazing!

Speed Racer would have been more like the cartoon if they had recorded it with the actors talking in bad Japanese and then dubbed over in their own voice.

OK let's set a criterion for this thread: Movies with a metascore of 50 or lower. That being said, here's a few more:

Image

Last Action Hero. Metascore: 44. My score: 80.

Image

The Box. Metascore: 47. My score: 55

Image

The Saint. Metascore: 50. My score: 75.

Image

Smokin' Aces. Metascore: 45. My score: 65.

Image

The Sixth Day. Metascore: 49. My score: 70.

Image

The Boondock Saints. Metascore: 44. My score: 75.

Image

Kung Pow!: Enter the Fist. Metascore: 14. My score: 60.

Image

Lady in the Water. Metascore: 36. My score: 70.

Image

Spaceballs. Metascore: 46. My score: 75.

Image

The Island. Metascore: 50. My score: 65.

Metascore doesn't actually list many of the older movies

Well, you're only giving it a 65, but I have to disagree with you here. Smokin' Aces was a fun idea executed very poorly.
Lady in the Water. Metascore: 36. My score: 70.

Other than the fact that it was kind of fun to just watch Paul Giamatti react to all the weird stuff he encounted in that film, I can't really think of anything positive to say about it.
The Island. Metascore: 50. My score: 65.

I agree with you here. I really don't like Michael Bay, but I do think that The Island was unfairly panned.

I thought the Island was going to be good its first half hour or so and then it all went down hill really quickly.
