48 Hrs., staring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. This film helped launched Murphy's movie career, resulting in some of my favorite films from the decade(The Golden Child was awesome), and apparently some people view it as the first buddy cop film. It's violent, funny, and at times openly racist, making for a gritty film that is brilliantly pulled off. And it doesn't pull punches. I really can't see a film like this being pulled off today.

Mad Detective (2007)

Johnnie To & Wai Ka-Fai's Mad Detective is a film that turns the Hong Kong crime genre upon it's head. Based around the simple concept of a man that can see everyone's hidden personas, Mad Detective is anything but formulaic and right from the very start disuades any notion that this is just another flashy HK crime flick. Lau Ching-Wan stars as the eponymous Mad Detective, Inspector Chan Kwai-Bun, a brilliant detective forced into retirement when his methods and actions become a little too bizarre. Alongside him Andy On plays young Inspector Ho who tries to enlist the aid of retired Inspector Bun to solve a complex murder case involving a missing police officer and a suspect with multiple personalities.

What follows is a highly ingenious, highly inventive and above all, highly entertaining piece of cinema. Paced perfectly, this viewer sat on the edge of his seat, intrigued and enthralled in equal measure and delighting and the simple, unrestrained freshness of this film and it's premise. Lau Ching-Wan plays his part exceptionally well as the oddball Inspector Bun, throwing all semblence of logic out of the window as he investigates the case, but it's a straight faced performance; there's no comedy here as the plot and it's characters take themselves very seriousley. However, despite this it's hard not to find humour in some of the scenes involving multiple personalities, and whether this was the directors intent or not, it does provide a handful of light hearted moments that help to break up this complex and down-right weird film into more palatable pieces.

Overall, if you're looking for a crime film that's as inventive and intriguing as it is enjoyable, you can't go wrong with Mad Detective. See it now before Hollywood does a shitty remake with Leonardo Di Caprio.

Agreed. You can zoom in one a penis hole in a movie and people aren't offended, but that scene in 48 HOURS where Nolte calls Murphy a nigger would have everyone up in arms these days.

HOP (formerly I HOP) is a wrap. Check it out 4/1/2011

Limewater wrote:District B13: No, this isn't some mockbuster from The Asylum that you might have seen on SyFy. This French film co-written and produced by Luc Besson is one of the earlier ones to prominently feature free running. In some sense, I guess this kind of dates it to a few years ago (it came out in 2004), but it's still a lot of fun to watch. The story is very simple, and a little stupid, but it's enough to frame some great action scenes. It's about what you expect from a movie co-written by Luc Besson that isn't The Fifth Element or Leon. It's a lot of fun, and currently available streaming on Netflix.
I have it on my Instant Queue, but I put my membership on hold due to some money issues. In fact, I'm gonna have to send back three of my remaining DVDs (part of the Star Trek Season 2 boxset) and put them back on my queue, just to avoid paying $15.

Dude, you just made me smile. Finally, another person here who knows what it is.

FYI, which version do you have? I only have the R1 DVD from 20th Century Fox, which sucks ass compared to the French DVD (which is second only to the French Blu-Ray). I wanna get the French DVD.

And the strange part? Tom Rothman, the current Chairman of 20th Century Fox, is a HUGE FAN of Phantom of the Paradise, as well as being married to Jessica Harper.

I actually DL'ed a patched DVD-R with English subs sometime before it was officially released here in the States. Haven't watched it yet, though. I wanna, though.

And I doubt it'll be remade with DiCaprio. Someone more capable at crazy, albeit with a mix of dark comedy and light drama. A part of me wants to say Jim Parsons. Parsons totally outranks DiCaprio, but then again... is that really an accomplishment?

Oh, wait. The Beach was pretty good. Only DiCaprio film I've ever seen.

:?: :?: :?:

Are you not a Scorsese fan? He's great in Gangs of NY, Departed, and Aviator (I haven't seen Shutter Island yet). He's also been good in Blood Diamond and Catch Me if You Can, and he's amazing in Revolutionary Road. Seriously, he's starred in some of my favorite films of the past decade, and is always up to the task of the role. Granted, I haven't seen The Beach...

Look, I plans to watch about 5 Araki films and Phantom of Paradise in the next week or so based on your recommendation/complaint. I think in fairness you should catch up on what Leo has been up to since Titanic 8) .

In order:

* Parsons has potential, while DiCaprio may peak soon.

* I do not know. I don't think I've seen a Scorsese film. I wanna see Taxi Driver (or is that Oliver Stone? For some reason, I get the two confused)

* No, I haven't seen those movies, and you NEED to see The Beach. It was made around the time DiCaprio was still blighted with his teen hearththrob status and it's so nutso. Oh, and DiCaprio bones Tilda Swinton.

* Glad to hear you're taking my advice, but I should tell you a few things. One, Phantom of the Paradise is on DVD in the States, but it's OOP (but still for sale) and the print is kinda weak. The French DVD is better. Nowhere is not out on DVD in the States, but it is on DVD in France. The Doom Generation is out on DVD in the States, but... you're better off going with the French DVD. Basically, the R1 DVD is VHS-quality, but the French DVD has been digitally remastered. If you're a member, check Cinematik. I used to be a member, but I was away too long and they pulled my account. And yet, they couldn't allow me to simply park my account.

* Recommendation.../COMPLAINT? I wasn't complaining. I was just stating a fact.

* Why? He may be good, but there are better actors out there. And guess what? Some of them aren't as well known. Christian Campbell, for example, can sing AND act, has credits in other genres, worked on stage, and deserves to act alongside Hollywood elite.

And JSYK... I think I may like Jennifer Connelly's work. Everything I've seen her in (Labyrinth, Dark City, 9, and The Day the Earth Stood Still) has has not disappointed.

Also... do you have an account on Cinemageddon? I'm "MrBlue86" over there.
