gamecube mod help

I'm thinking of buying a xenogc
as they are really cheap and I don't care about features, as long as it works.
But the only problem I have is is wondering weather or not my burner will work with the gamecube.
It's a sony dvd-rw made by LG.
DW-G120a is the model, so has anyone used this drive before or knows if it works?

Hey man, I enjoy doing mods for the education and challenge but frankly GC modding is a bit disappointing. I went with a Viper Extreme and was not pleased. The Gamecube laser is extremely picky and sometimes simply will not read your burned games. I bought a new DVD burner, ritek mini dvds, and even adjusted my potiometer settings and I still ran into DREs on some games. Games with cinematics like Wind Waker are likely to trip you up. It's just a crap shoot.

My advice to you is to save your money and just buy real games. By the time you've shelled out money for a chip, and mini dvds (or a new case), a custom bit to open the case, you really aren't saving much. This is assuming your DVD burner will even work for this.

If you're hell bent on playing backed up GC games I'd try and get your hands on Wii and mod it. I've heard the Wii's laser is much more forgiving and you can use full size discs.

Or you could divert those funds to modding something really cool like a Saturn or an Xbox. Xbox mods are so beautiful, powerful, and hassle free.

Maybe I'm a bit bitter, but if I had realized what I was getting into I would have focused on another mod. It's really depressing to pour time into a project and just see it go nowhere.

yeah dude im in the process of modding an xbox, so a link to a cheap action reply or how to make a usb-drive thing, would be cool. I'm with you about the gamecube, at least nintendo was smart as hell with all the anti-piracy implemented with the gamecube, instead of software blocks, they were creative and used mini-dvds, tricky lasers. But i dont want to completely give up on it, so anyone that could give me a little help on the gamecube would be cool.

Why not softmod the xbox? I have done over 10 now for friends. I used the action replay that i got at gamestop for $20-$30. Made my money back charing kids to mod theirs upping the hard drives and all.

By softmodding the Xbox, can you play imports and backups?

I know you can ftp an iso image or import right over to the hard drive. After putting in a bigger drive I have never cared enough to burn an xbox game onto dvd and boot it from a DVD-R but it should work.

So probably the easiest thing would be to: softmod it, put in a larger hdd, then on my PC - convert any games I have to iso and transfer them to the xbox?

Don't think they run on iso format. When I put games on my xbox I use
a program installed on the xbox to transfer the game to the hdd. Maybe someone can confirm which program uploads directly to the xbox from the pc or in which format it has to be done. Xbox lenses are crap try not using it too much with burned discs.

Get it running xbox media center and you can read all you're media from the pc on a network.

As for modding a GC, I say go with a Qoob Pro. I've had mine for a while and have had no problems playing any games. I use Ritek Minis and every image I have burned has been successful. I haven't had to readjust my potentiometer at all, either.

Just burn your games at a slow speed and any good big name brand drive should work (including your LG). The GC is more picky about the media from what I know.

If you're unsure about whether you're going to be successful with your DVD writer/media/cube combination, softmodding your cube may be your best bet. All you need is an Action Replay and an official Nintendo 251 or 59 memory card that's had GCOS loaded onto it. Then it's as simple as:

1. Start the cube with the Action Replay disc and prepared memory card put in.
2. Push start game, open and close the lid.
3. Swap in your burned homebrew/backup disc, and follow the GCOS menu prompts until you're in the game.
