Japanese Punk, Hardcore, Crust, Metal, Noise etc...

Post by Octopod »

Since music threads seem to pop up here fairly often I thought I would make one. And since I had my records out I thought I would share some pics of my small collection of Japanese Hardcore punk/crust/grindcore. Are there any other fans that frequent these forums?

Also if anyone has any cool Japanese vinyl/CD's feel free to share!

I have recently got into the Noise Rock band Bordoms.

I wish I had some GISM vinyl.

I like the noise-core punk that was coming out of Kyushu in the 80's like Confuse, Gai, Kuro...

Also the Gess and State Children demos and the Swankys are all good noise. :D

Edit: Or by noise do you mean more like stuff like Merzbow or whatever? I do not really know anything about that stuff but it is pretty cool.

I'll have to check into some of these bands, I love all the noise punk and grind music, it's way too gnarly. I'm a huge fan of the Locust, and I'm crazy jealous of that Melt Banana split. Have you ever seen The Locust play live? They have one of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen.

On a related note, are there any good sites to read up on various Japanese punk acts and such? I've always had a bit of trouble finding info on these bands because they're both foreign and obscure.

I have never seen the Locus. I bought that split because I dig Melt Banana.

Like you said, it is hard to find info but it is getting easier. A lot of the current bands also have myspace pages.

If you find bands you are interested in searching blogspot sometimes turns up some DL links for out of print stuff.

Kill from the heart has some info...

7inch punk has info on music from everywhere. Searching Japan seems to work alright.

HG Fact is a good Japanese label. There are several good Japanese labels but sometimes you can find stuff on small distributors in the US or Europe. Some US labels even do a US release which is always way cheaper than buying the Japanese release. Media in Japan is crazy expensive and then add shipping on top of that...uhg. If you want to know some US distributors let me know.

MCR company - another good label/distro based out of Japan.

For metal you can search Japan at Metal-Archives. They also have some hardcore bands listed but they are all mixed together.

People also do zines and there are small forums dedicated to the topic.

Edit: I forgot, Tokyo Damage Report is kind of cool. It is basically this dudes blog. I haven't visited it in a bit and it seems the navigation has been charged for the worse. He goes to a lot of shows though and takes a lot of pics. He also goes to the kind of places where girls pee in bowls for old men to drink and stuff like that too so browse at your own risk, or whatever.

I've tried getting into Japanese music a few times but it's always come off as a caricature of music I'm already not too fond of.

If you've got any suggestions for Japanese bands in the veins of:

Post-Hardcore: Helmet, Quicksand, Jawbox, etc.

Space Rock: Smashing Pumpkins, Failure, codeseven, etc.

Prog-whatever: Deftones, Tool, Dredg, etc.

Trippy stuff with female vocalists: Bjork, Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, etc.

Let me know.

I do not know anything about any o that kind of stuff. Sorry dude. Check out that Tokyo Damage Report link above I guess. That guy goes to all kinds of shows.

I wonder what that dude does? It seems like he doesn't work. He is from the US, lives in Japan and just goes to see bands play, sex shows, toy shows, etc. I wanna do that!

From Wikipedia:

Crust punk (often simply crust) is a form of music influenced by anarcho-punk, hardcore punk and extreme metal. The style, which evolved in the mid-1980s in England, often has songs with dark and pessimistic lyrics that linger on political and social ills.

Ok, I feel like I am spamming my own thread. Surely someone has some pics to share. I thought this site was full of people who go crazy for Japanese shit for the most part.

I guess a lot of people just down load music though.

You've just posted about a very indie vein of music, that's all. My Japanese stuff is mostly limited to Mad Capsule Markets, some assorted Ryuichi Sakamoto things, a Laputa (band not the movie) best of, a little Merzbow and assorted noise stuff on comps, and the Schwein and Schaft projects which I got because I am into Raymond Watts/Pig. There are a few other random things, but that's it.
