older ps2s had build quality issues. You can find ones that work great even now, of course, but its not at all uncommon to have a ps2 that has trouble reading blue-bottomed discs and ps1 games.

Yep it's a very common problem with the fat PS2s. Just get a slim and install a HDD in the fat. I play a lot of my games on the PS3, those that don't play on the PS3 get installed to the HDD on the fat. The ones that don't play on the fat, get played on my slim.

I've got a launch ps2 and it barely reads ps1 games. Sometimes it will read them without a problem or sometimes the shutter will be fucked up and will almost give you a seizure. CD-ROM games also don't play. Weird thing is that I remember MGS2 not working on my PS2 when it came out. It still reads everything else fine though. So it goes.

My girlfriend's ps2 was from launch, and it only just recently (as in last year) started giving us ANY trouble reading discs.
That thing was used pretty heavily too.
Must've been a lucky model.

Got 2 fats, both work fine with CD Blue disks and the CD version HDAdvance. Both have CD REZ installed.
Have 1 with firewire and 1 without, I think V5 and V10. Took two different model number fat Flip Tops.
Guess I'm lucky.

Alright, I guess I'll adjust the laser and go from there. Honestly though, I think I might just try to repair my PS1 (worn gear) rather than pick up a Slim. It's just cheaper.
I'm also thinking about getting a hard drive and just using HD loader with my PS2 from now on, I want to put as little mileage on the laser as possible at this point. I doubt it, but is there a similar solution for PS1 games?

No luck, Hard drive in PS2 strictly for PS2 mode games, homebrew and EMUs. Fats are handy with that internal IDE bay. Plus if a CD disc or scratched disc won't work in one fat, simply temporarily move hard drive to another fat to install the PS2 games. Drive can easily be swapped to any fat with no protection bootup serials unlike current Gens. You can also go through arduous PC install process.Dylan wrote:Alright, I guess I'll adjust the laser and go from there. Too bad about the PS1, it could really use the alternative. One last question, is it possible to use an ATA hard drive in the expansion bay instead of an IDE one?

PATAs yes.
Keep under 500gb.
Western Digitals will require slight cutout mod of Network adapter.
Don't use this beast.
