1.5s usually have newer drives. Read up on what drive you have. The Samsung's the best, while the Thomson is the troublemaker. My 1.3 had a Samsung.

Mine is a fairly early machine ( can't remember what model it is though ) and it came with a samsung drive which worked fine and still does for that matter with the exception of it sticking sometimes when I try to eject a disc.

However I got my hands on a busted machine that had a thompson drive which I swapped for the samsung in my machine ,and i don't know why people bag out on them so much, the thompson drive has worked great for me for the past 8 months ,and it reads just about any disc I care to throw at it, but if I ever do have a problem I still have the old samsung drive on hand just in case.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I had a Thompson drive for my Xbox - utter crap. It used to read DVD+Rs fine to...then stopped. Then it had issues with games discs. Interesting thing though I noticed - it could play DVDs usually fine once they started or rip Xbox games. Like so long as the laser was constantly reading in a straight line (so to speak) on the disc without jumping around it would be fine.

Go with the Samsung I think would be best.

Unless you play on Live, I think with the original Xbox it is now a great time to softmod it and install a larger hard disk with prices as low as they are. Most games will run off the hard drive fine - save the life of your laser and decrease load times by a lot. Not to mention you can play imported DVDs and games as well.
