Use the aggregators and read a few reviews by sites you generally trust. Gamespot and 1UP are my recommendations among the bigger commercial sites.
Another thing I like to do is just check out videos. You can tell a lot about a game by seeing it in action. There's almost no retro title that isn't represented on YouTube.
