What was the last movie you've seen?

The Terminator - I'd seen 2 and 3 before but I'd never seen the first. For some reason I was under the impression that the first was pretty much a throwaway early 80s movie and it was just the second one that was really good. I'll rewatch 2 and 3 before diving into 4.

Yeah, I dunno either. I also don't see how I made it through the intermediate school years without seeing it when grocery stores were flirting with VHS rental and my mom always had "buy $50 in groceries get a free rental" coupons. I watched a lot of 80s sci-fi and such. Repo Man was an interesting movie, though it was a little uncomfortable to watch with my mom giving me dirty looks from the other room because of all the cursing.

T2 is the best in the series.

For once, a third movie in a series that doesn't suck other than LotR: Return of the King!

The first Terminator movie is so badass, while overall I think T2 is the better movie, they are so different in feel to one anther you cant really compared. T1 has that awesome cyberpunk feeling that is missing from the second.

Yeah, just rewatched T2. T2 is better, but 1 is definitely grittier.

I just saw Evangelion Rebuild 2.2

It was certainly a blast watching and I really hope Rebuild 3 comes out soon.

My all time favorite line, that made me laugh uncontrollably has got to be: "I didn't know Eva pilots could be happy."

Things to Come (1936) – This early sci-fi film is a joy to watch – amazing set pieces, interesting designs for the technology, and a believable post-apocalyptic landscape. Some of the acting is decent as well, and the plot - while inconsistent – is continually intriguing. This is somewhat based on H.G. Wells’ The Shape of Things to Come, and he had a hand in the film as well. And though everything is related, there are basically three separate stories woven into one three-act film here. The opening act is probably the least interesting, so persevere through it if you plan to watch the film but find yourself bored early. The middle story (which is the longest) is by far the best, most interesting, and well worth seeing. The last left me wanting more from the possibilities that could have been, but is worth seeing for the amazing effects and set design alone (for 1936). In the end, it is a fascinating post-apocalyptic film that plays on utopian/dystopian themes and is written by Wells. You can’t really go wrong if any of those things appeal to you.

Corpse Bride (2005) – I thought I had seen this before, but I was wrong. So I watched it. And fell asleep. Twice. After rewinding and watching the whole thing, I can say that I was fairly unimpressed. The animation/claymation is top notch and the score is decent for setting the atmosphere – but the story is dreadfully dull and the characters were uninteresting. At least the short length felt right. Fairly indicative of Burton’s 15 year rut.
Grade: 2/5

Observe and Report (2009) – I watched this because it happened to be on, and am not sure why I couldn’t come to my senses and turn it off. I know it is supposed to be a comedy, but I don’t think I laughed once – not even a chuckle – during the whole film. Rogen, who I can usually stomach, seems to be uninterested in his character and the supporting cast is entirely forgettable. Bleh.

Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth (1992) – This series, which doesn’t even start on a very high note, continues to provide diminishing returns. The start of the film was actually somewhat intriguing/interesting, but once pinhead and crew get into the action, the film just goes downhill fast. The new cenobites are laughable, the kills and effects are less creative than in the past films, and instead of borrowing from the best elements of the first two films, it seems to borrow from the worst. Unless someone can confirm that some later movie in this series is actually worth seeing, I think I’m done with the Clive Barker’s bore fest.

The Holy Mountain (1973) – Saw this on the recommendation of a forum member. I do not think a more visually stunning film has been made. A bizarre, twisted, insane film that attempts to put the most shocking, depraved, stunning, and instantly memorable visuals to celluloid. The film is light on plot (although an interesting one comes together in the last half), but that isn’t the point. The only thing I can begin to compare it to would be Baraka, although that film is celebratory and revealing in the way that this film is deviant and perplexing. The costuming, set design, music choices, and effects are all brilliantly conceived. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much nudity in a film outside of a porno, gore outside of a splatter film, nor as many profane acts outside of perhaps some over the top anti-religion horror film. But all these comparisons are not fair – The Holy Mountain stands on its own as a visual treat and shouldn’t be missed.
