Backing up Game Boy saves?

Post by caffeinedreamer »

Hey all. I'm wanting to back up my Game Boy Camera saves to extract the photos from them. can anyone recommend some hardware that allows me to do this?

I seem to be having no luck finding any, as most cartridges that look like they might be of use end up being flash carts with no other purpose than playing ROMs.

Any help (especially links to purchase such an item) would be appreciated!

:P

I know that for different consoles, the programmers for the flash carts can can usually dump a real cart, some times they can even dump the save file.

I don't know of any in specific to the Gameboy, but maybe one of the flash carts you already looked at uses a programmer that can dump the SRAM.

Madcatz made an adapter that hooks up to the multiplayer port of a gameboy and a PC printer port to save the pictures as bmp upon them being printed. I auctioed mine off at the racketboy charity auction. With the right connection software, a bung / flash linker cart programmer can extract the pictures from the cart's save file. I'll be back home in a few days and then I could provide the software I'm talking about.

I forgot about this thing. It uses a parallel port, right?

Don't know if it works for Gameboy or Gameboy Color carts... but a homebrew software called REIN/RAIN can backup/restore GBA save files... it might work with GB/GBC ones too.

I think I have that same thing, it'll back up saves but it doesn't transfer them to a computer.

Yes, Parallel / LPT port. The software is made for Windows 98se, and I couldn't get it to work in XP, so I needed to boot into my old windows 98 partition to transfer pictures.

The software does work well once you can get it interfacing with the printer port correctly.

The Flash Advance cart programmer/dumper has similar issues since it too connects through the Parallel printer port. I got it to work in XP using DirectIO or GiveIO, or UserPort (can't remember which one).

I just found a bunch of other software on my hard drive for working with gameboy camera pictures. One called "Gameboy Printer Emulator 2.0" has simple schematics for making your own cable to transfer pictures.

Here's a zip file of the directory:

Ohyeah, I've also successfully recorded video from a gameboy camera connected to a Super Gameboy, connected to a video capture card through s-video at original resolution and quality tho that took a lot of tweaking and was quite difficult.
