How's your opinion of FFXIII's standing in the series?

I don't like FF games that much anyway, 13 seems like a step forwards and backwards to me. I like the new combat system and the fact you don't have to grind like at all.

On the other hand, it's very linear, and the characters seem to annoy me still (as they always have).

i would put it in the middle of the pack.
its not as good as 6, but it is better than 2,5,8,x-2, and 3

I'd place it right above FFX 2 and FF X2 is last on my list. That's not to say that FF13 totally sucks. The combat system alone saves it, and the awesome graphics and good sountrack help too, but the game as a whole feels a bit lacking compared to its predecessors.

It ranked 4th for me. I loved the gameplay and thought the battle system was the best in the series. But the story is, at best, a passable story that "has it's moments."

I haven't played XIII, but I saw a friend play it and I'm really not sure I'll ever give it a try. This is coming from someone who has come nearly as close as a person can get to even beating Final Fantasy XI. I'm certainly no stranger to the series. (Though I've never beaten 1, 2, or 3. I'm no stranger to old RPGs, but I really couldn't find the motivation to finish any of them. I also didn't finish XII, which I thought was a mediocre blend of numerous RPG styles.)

As for MrPopo's list, IV falls far too low on the list for my liking... I'd rank it right after VI, personally, or after V at worst.
