I have the same problem, but I put a new 72 pin in that I bought from e-bay. I only works in the up position.

I just bent the pins in one of my spare systems and have the exact same problem. Any cart will work great (even without cleaning) when inserted without clicking it down.

Could it be an issue with all the carts - sounds absurd, but if they were all in storage or something, perhaps they are all extremely dusty. I have gotten lots before where none of the games work at first until they are cleaned. Just a thought. If all else fails, though, I would def replaced the 72 pin connector. I also wasn't aware the light on the NES system could blink in any color other than red. I have had two NES systems and both only ever displayed a red light. I would hesitate to diagnose a problem based on the system blinking red if this is the case because it could be any issue and still blink red. I admit, though, that I do not know if they blink in other colors or not so disregard this if I am wrong.

Red is the only color, it's a single color led in there.

As for the connection issue, you've obviously bent them enough, but I bet that it's working while at the high (up) angle because all of the pins are touching the cart, but when you push it down, because the cart is at a different angle, the game has now rotated on to the original contact points on the pins and they're still all corroded. Either try cleaning the connector with a cleaning cart, the cardboard method or whatnot, or simply get a new connector.

The problem may lie with the small lip of the depresser (?) not being seated properly underneath the circuit board. I would suggest opening the machine back up and making sure everything is in its place.

Take some clean cardboard from a food box such as cereal or something. Double or triple it over brown side out and slide it into the slot. Then dampen the cardboard by the slot with contact cleaner or alcohol and move it in and out a bit. Repeat as necessary with a new clean pieces.
