Wow. I must obtain Sengoku 3.
Many thanks, Gamerforlife. Those three are some of the few you listed that I had not played, and I hadn't even heard of Sengoku. The Sengoku theme (especially 3)is right up my alley.
I've got to check out HG101 for more info. If you just made me buy a NEOGEO, I hate you...

I actually have Sengoku 3 running on a Neo Geo emulator on my PSP, but if I actually could get my hands on a real Neo Geo, Sengoku 3 would likely be the first game I would try and hunt down. Neo Geo had some good games, too bad the damn thing was so expensive or I might have jumped on that bandwagon years ago

Re: final fight series vs streets of rage series
Overall the SOR series wins for me but is is pretty close. If I were ranking them individually it would look like this
1. Final Fight Arcade/Sega CD- The SNES version is a damn joke, thankfully the Sega CD port came out so the game had a good home console port. It's hard to explain why this is number 1 because there are not very much attacks etc. nostalgia definitely helps
2. Streets of Rage 3 Bare Knuckle 3- Bare Knuckle 3 is the better of the 2 versions, but I still like SOR 3 better then number 2. Faster game with more moves really makes it fun.
3. Streets of Rage 2- I played this one growing up more then any of the other games. Great soundtrack and variety of moves.
4. Final Fight 3- Played this one the least out of all these games. Final Fight looks great with the big sprites finally there is some variety for moves.
5. Final Fight 2/ Streets of Rage 1- These games I will say are a tie. But considering how dated Streets of Rage 1 looks compared to Final Fight 2 it is a little embarrassing Capcom could not do more.
I think when people are calling SOR and Final Fight overrated it's not fair. Most games that are "better" in people's eyes never saw home ports. There is no denying these are the best Beat Em Ups you can play on a home console.
My Favorite Arcade Beat Em Ups That I have played
AVP Geeez this game was awesome as a kid I was so excited to find out AVP was on the SNES yea.... I was disappointing
Simpsons Only good Simpson's game to date, why can't we have a revival of 2D Beat Em Ups when everyone loves them?
The Punisher game was awesome with the Pistol always played as Nick Fury with the Cigar Genesis port was very fun as well. Not very appealing to the eyes though.

I respectfully disagreecowboyscowboys wrote:I think when people are calling SOR and Final Fight overrated it's not fair. Most games that are "better" in people's eyes never saw home ports. There is no denying these are the best Beat Em Ups you can play on a home console.
I can play Dungeons & Dragons:Shadow over Mystara on the Saturn, Turtles in Time on the SNES, Sengoku 3 on the Neo Geo, Ninja Warriors Again on the SNES, Sword of the Berserker on the Dreamcast, Guardian Heroes on the Saturn, Panzer Bandit on the PS1, Castle Crashers on the 360, Three Dirty Dwarves on the Saturn, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks on the PS2, I could go on with more examples.
Again, it's just my opinion, but SOR and Final Fight are not even close to being the best console beat'em ups available. They're overrated and only people who haven't played a lot of beat'em ups rate them so highly. They are classic though, for paving the way for other games, but the genre left them behind a long time ago

I have to respectfully disagree with Three Dirty Dwarves and Sword of the Berserker.
Most people love SOR and FF probably because they are some of the most well known beat 'em ups.
Incidentally, I just picked up King of Dragons, and DAMN. Love these old Capcom sidescrollers!

Re: final fight series vs streets of rage series
They could have used the engine from Slashout/Spikeout for a 3D SOR game but it seems Sega are keen on keeping the series buried in the past.
I finished FF3 recently using an emulator and it nothing for me. I always prefered SOR because of all the reasons already mentioned. The sprites of FF1 looked bigger and more detailed but by SOR2 that shortcoming was fixed. Co-op tricks in SOR3 (or BK3, since I never got the localised version) was a welcome addition and I always encouraged my n-game partners to utilise them.
Konami made some stylish beat'em ups but they usually involved mashing the attack button hoping for enough contact damage. Capcom expanded upon the formula and delivered some really good beat'em ups with deeper gameplay mechanics, and SNK pretty much perfected the genre with Sengoku 3, which I didn't fancy all that much for some reason. The 3D brawlers were usually crappy affairs but games like DieHard Arcade, The Warriors and Spikeout offered enough variation to keep the gameplay fresh for a few playthroughs.

I honestly would take Three Dirty Dwarves over SOR/FF. Another that Gamerforlife forgot was Die Hard Arcade - another I would take over SOR/FF.bladerunner wrote:I have to respectfully disagree with Three Dirty Dwarves and Sword of the Berserker.
Just because they are old/popular/classic, doesn't make them better than other games. Mechanically, the SOR and FF series are very basic. The AI patterns of enemies are extremely predictable. There's little in the way of complexity, and it's very easy to get bored with them.
Compared to other games - like even Dinosaurs & Cadillacs and The Punisher, which were made with the same engine as Final Fight - there's just little reason to go back.

Yup, I still like the SOR and Final Fight games and respect them as an important piece of history, but they really do feel very dated. I have fun playing them from time to time though when I'm in the mood for a more simplistic beat'em up, and they both have the nostalgia factor going for them. But I do wish people who love SOR/Final Fight so much would search out other beat'em ups and see how much the genre has evolved over timethe7k wrote:I honestly would take Three Dirty Dwarves over SOR/FF. The only reason I didn't mention Die Hard Arcade is because the controls are a bit iffy and the game has some randonness to it. It's a lot of fun to play though, but I think it lacks polish

Re: final fight series vs streets of rage series
Well, I do love the Capcom beatemups, particularly Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, The Punisher (which I just picked up for Genesis BTW), Captain Commando, etc. I also love the classic Konami beatemups, TMNT, Sunset Riders, and Mystic Warriors. I also enjoyed some of the later 3d beatemups like Die Hard Arcade, Dynamite Cop, God Hand and Three Dirty Dwarves(well TDD ids a 2D/3D hybrid I guess). Sengoku 3 is also a superb beatemup, and I like you Gamerforlife, would make it my first Neo Geo game purchase. I will be honest that I never really liked Sword of the Berserk, but to each his own. And I have owned that game for sometime now. Lets not forget Castle Crashers, a splendid modern beatemup.Gamerforlife wrote:Yup, I still like the SOR and Final Fight games and respect them as an important piece of history, but they really do feel very dated. Despite all of this though I still love SOR (particularly SOR2) more than any of the others. I play it at least once a month. I agree that it is important to be aware of where the genre is going, but I still feel that the days of SOR/FF were the Golden Age of beatemups. Not to say they were technically the best, which really isn't what we were discussing (which was really what fans of the series felt were better; FF or SOR). A lot of this is perhaps because I am getting older and that generation of gaming is perhaps my favorite for nostalgic reasons. But man, SOR to me is just so satisfying in ways that many of the other games just aren't.
I really wish Capcom/Sega would find it in their hearts to do new things with those franchises (lets forget about FF: Streetwise). Then we could all be happy. I am all for new entries in the genre, it decidedly needs some more titles.
