I wouldn't say basing a game around something thats already been done is exactly innovative but to eachs own I suppose.slowslow325 wrote: But the entire game is based around this mechanic, it's something that is innovative if you look at it right.

Re: Favorite franchises !
You know the whole innovation thing is all relative, or rather, based on perspective. Quick Time Events in Resident Evil 4 seemed innovative to anyone who had never heard of Shenmue or Dragon's Lair. That's why I love learning more and more about old video games. Helps gives you a sense of where different ideas REALLY came from.

I just really don't think something is innovative if it's just thrown into a minigame as a little side thought.

Re: Favorite franchises !
1. Pokemon - For the most part I played Pokemon games as a kid. Yeah, they've started to get samey, but fuck me if I won't buy the new ones when they come out.
2. Legend of Zelda - whenever I wasn't playing Pokemon as a kid, I'd be playing the Zelda games. There's been some debate about how they've done nothing innovative, but I beg to differ. Ocarina of Time introduced several elements that revolutionized the 3D action/adventure game, and gaming in general. Context-specific buttons? In OoT first. Z-locking to prevent camera dickery in heated combat? Hi OoT!
3. Mass Effect- Seriously fallen in love with this franchise. I'd say I like Dragon Age more, but I don't consider it a full franchise yet.
4. Final Fantasy- Yes, the games are disconnected, there are flaws, but in general the Final Fantasy label is Squenix's gold seal of quality. I sort of have a love/hate with it though, since I wish Squenix would make more one-off interesting games like Live A Live.

We know already. This is like what, the 6th time you mentioned this since E3Pulsar_t wrote:Franchises stifle innovation. I've had enough sequels, prequels and spin-offs.
I say we should have both. I like new and old. Hello, this is a retro site we like the old, used and tried here. There should never just be too much of either.
That said here are my favorite franchises if not atypical.
Mario (All) - Platformer, puzzle, rpg, sports, racing and and a lot of other genres. An indearing character who makes all types of games fun. If you want to try a genre out that you don't like then play Mario's take on it.
Legend of Zelda - This franchise is slow to innovate, but thats not why I love it. You jump in and feel right at home with only tweaks to the tried and true formula.
Star Fox - I love all the games in this series while others only like two. I have not liked any other behind view shooter quite as much the closest is Rogue Squadron.
Dragon Quest - Final Fantasy, what.... this is the best rpg franchise. Spans severla systems and again a series that is slow to innovate. I like picking up a game and feeling right at home even if it looks a little different. No emo boys in this series, at least none I have seen, still havent played every game in the series.

Mario-It's f ing Mario, I love platformers, and Paper Mario is my favorite subseries and series ever.
Pokemon-I just love having so many options to customize your team, they are all so unique and fun.
Fire Emblem-I like they way the units are, and the fantasy appeal is really there.
yeah, I am a Nintendo junkie. I would list more, but they're all Nintendo.

Its funny how Street Fighter II is a franchise because of all the rereleases they did of that game.sevin0seven wrote: Street Fighter 2
