Batteries leaked in GBA, now won't work

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

I left a pair of AA's in my first gen GBA for several years now and I just now noticed. They appear to have leaked. I took them out and swabbed it up, but my GBA won't power on now even with good batteries.

I've already taken my GBA apart with a twiwing screwdriver and cleaned the PCB with a water/baking soda mixture to remove all the acid and remove the corrosion.

It still won't turn on. What do you guys suggest I try?

Try using a gba AC charger see if it turns on or not. wear rubber gloves just in case. Get your self a gba sp brighter lite.

Should have used Alcohol. You made sure it was 100% dry before turning it on right? Chances are the battery acid has fucked the PCB beyond repair but the water definitely didn't help.

Is the PCB completely clean? Or is there still some residue left?

I would also look at the traces to see if any of them got nicked or scratched. I have to think that you have a short or an open circuit. The other thing to check is to put the new batteries in and see if the relevant points on the PCB are getting power. It's possible that the battery contacts are not making a good connection with the battery.

Did you clean the battery contacts, I mean actually scraping them till shiny?
How about direct power from the charger?

I hadn't replied yet because I was just gonna say visually inspect parts, look for spots where the acid might have damaged something too much. Check for continuity on the battery contacts to somewhere else the traces lead on the board. Kinda hard to say what sort of things to look for exactly. Not that I'm an expert.

Hope you didn't drown that board, some parts such as capacitors kind of hard to dry them out.
