Playstation 2 disc tray rattling when ejected

Post by Ducky »

Hey there,
Just got a PS2 off eBay and the disc tray rattles when ejected. I'd like to know how I could realign the tray or something.
I looked around online and the problem is exactly the same as what's happening here:
The model number is SPCH-30002, if that helps?
Cheers,
Hugh

I don't think you have to worry about it. My launch model PS2 has been doing that for about 3 years now. I still use it a few times a week and have never had any problems. I was a little worried in the beginning but now I couldn't care less.

No big deal as long as tray is sliding out and not stopping intermittently. If there is binding very light lithium grease on the tray tracks will help. Though not a robust solution you can always add a flip lid if it ever did fail. Be sure drive fully stopped before flipping open.

Not to high-jack this thread but, out of curiosity- how much would this damage the laser if i were to accidentally flip it open before the drive stopped?

I have a slim ps2 and am thinking of getting the flip-top to use magic swap. I am already a little put-off by having to replace any part of the shell of my ps2 but if its also easy to damage by accidentally doing the above, i may change my mind on buying it.

If the disc is still spinning and you open the lid so it's no longer clamped down, the disc might start slipping on the spindle, or it could launch out of the system. Since it isn't being ejected the laser and spindle aren't moving down out of the way so if the disc is launched or flopping while spinning it could hit the laser lens.

Years ago I had borrowed a terribly cheap portable CD player that decided to spin up to modern PC drive speeds randomly when the batteries were nearly dead. I foolishly opened the cover while it was doing this and the disc leapt out at me and skittered across the floor. Granted a PS2 is likely to be sitting level, not at an angle, but you'd still want to be sure the disc had stopped and not temp fate.

Have this on both my fats. Disadvantages of the Flip Top add on.

1. Not very robust, easy to break hinges if not careful.
2. Disc takes a while to stop spinning.

Opening the lid with the disc spinning will result in scratched up game disc and possible permanent scratch damage to the laser.

Yeah, no thanks. I'm not interested in putting a flip lid in.
I suppose I could ignore it but surely there is a simple fix or a tutorial I could follow online. Saw the problem as "CD Tray Alignment" under a "Playstation 2 Repair Guide" but I don't feel as though I should spend money when I'm sure there's a free tutorial tucked away within the internet somewhere.
So, does anybody else know how I could potentially fix this problem, if at all?
Cheers,
Hugh
