It's pointless because it's something that is quite a lot of work, for a result that isn't any better than what it was before.

I must say, 'pointless' is a little harsh.

Controller looks cool spinksy, keep it up :)
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Yeah, I mean it works for him...as long as he prefers it then it has a point. It's all perspective really.

Plus, if you're technically minded, little projects like this are fun and tend to breathe new life in your interest in a system.

I think the pointless point is that the added analog stick mod behaves as a digital pad. "Mouse" look on the added stick for instance would not have a user controlled speed. A secondary Digital stick in addition to digital pad adds to controller appeal though a second true analog would be the idea setup.

Yes, at least somebody else out there gets it.

This is just my point though, how is it pointless if it moves it UNDER the face buttons? Try to play with analog and dpad one above the other.... Anyway, for those of us who hate using the face buttons for movement and would actually like to have the buttons used for something else like oh I don't know, something obvious like changing weapons or jumping? Have you ever played Gundam 0079 side story? This setup looks perfect for that game to me, as you by default have your looking and moving done with D-pad and analog, wich is a VERY difficult way to play the game if you are used to dual sticks. Albeit true, its not analog, but is the "offical" arcade joystick analog either? That seems to work well for Fighters and Shmups last I checked.

Who cars, if you don't like it and think it's pointless? So be it, I just thought some people might find this an alternative to using the goddamned face buttons, and might have a little respect for the guy since it is something totaly unique. Besides, how would one make it true analog anyway? I don't see how this could be done, and this makes sence if you are JUST using the right stick for forwards and backwards or straifing left to right, it doesent need to be full analog anyway, the important thing is that you can still leave the left stick for aiming, which would still be more accurate than digital buttons.

Anyway, for those that like it, good for you. For those that hate it, you are entitled to your opinion just as well as the next guy is.

Ok, I said that I would post pictures of mine when I got it in the mail, so here it is.

And for comparison, a stock controller next to it.

This is great for playing long sessions of GT2 Bleem! Much more precise movement from the cars, as my other controller was way too squeaky, and was uncomfortable to my thumb after long periods of time. I actually enjoy my games moreso now, since it has the plastic stick from a 360 controller. The one I have is the full stick, nub and shaft and everything, the original one has been completly removed, and this fitted over where the other one was. This is a bit different than the one that Spinsky made, as he only used the rubber head of a 360 stick on his, this has the full plastic part of the stick.

That doesn't work though. The buttons are still used for the same thing. The Dreamcast doesn't magically accept more button inputs just because you've wired a couple of pots to the face-button traces. Do you even know what you are talking about?

This could be used as a cheap alternative to tearing apart a working 360 pad for the buttons and stick. I don't know about the usefulness of the mod since I don't really play the type of games that would benefit from it. But that stick certainly looks more comfortable and the buttons look more appealing. Besides the original dreamcast controller buttons collect dirt in the indentations and the new ones wouldn't.

How does it not work for the FPS games I mentioned earlier? Anybody should know that HL and Quake 3 and many other FPS games on Dreamcast have fully configurable controlls, since on the kb you can customize your keys as you want. Now, on the controller, it isn't any different. Sure, those actions that were reserverd to the D-pad in Half Life, could easily be remapped to be on the face buttons, I.E. Jump, Flashlight, Crouch ect.

For some reason I think you might have misconstrued my original idea. You map the right stick, as the D-pad, since that is what it replaces, to be the forwards, backwards and left and right strafe. It really doesent need to be analog to strafe and move forward, only thing you should be concerned with being a precise analog is the left stick, which is what you aim with in Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Half Life and the classic FPS ports like Doom 1-2 and Hexen and Quake 1-2. All these games have fully customizable controlls.
