Are you guys giving 3D gaming the finger because it's the popular vote? One of those, "As a hardcore gamer I..." scenarios. I'm just asking.

I'm totally stoked for 3D gaming, namely 3DS - did you freaking see Metal Gear?! Undoubtedly we'll see more gimmicky imagine games, changing virtual diapers in 3D and who knows what else. As others have already stated, done right, this technology has some sweet possibilities.

But it gets confusing now! When I describe a game as 3D as in 3D platformer, we'll have to ask "so is it real 3D?" and when I say 2D, it could also describe a 3D platformers. And 2.5D... Oh gosh!

Nintendo showcases gimmicky hardware, people raise eyebrows.

STOP THE PRESS.

Seriously though, Nintendo has realized that their dominent position in the market is on the verge of imploding becuase they have no preparation for the future, The Wii is supposed to last until at least 2011 while being based on technology Nintendo began work on in the 1990s, and the DS isn't going to last if a PSP2 comes out any time soon. So they're scrambling, and they're likely going to pull a Sega and release another under-powered console about a year before Sony and Microsoft.

When have Nintendo handhelds been the most powerfull on the market, like what a year before another company makes a more powerful system? So whats your point? DS came out before the PSP. By your mindset DS should not have sold way more than the PSP, the more powerful system. Nintendo has not been the first console release of any generation, mostly some where in the middle, nor the most powerful. From the looks of the E3 show it looks like everyone else is scrambling.

How did this turn into a topic about the 3DS? No one is doubting the 3DS - only this nebulous future console that would require a 3D television and 3D glasses.

That said, I agree that no one should be complaining. 3D is optional and any developer in their right mind will keep it that way. I can't even think of a 3D film that didn't have a standard version released alongside it, since the digital projection technology needed for 3D movies is not yet a standard. There's no reason not to include 3D for those that enjoy it.

I think 3D can bring a texture and definition to images, but unfortunately the degraded image quality it brings along make it an typically unworthy endeavor until the technology improves. I think movies like Coraline and Avatar have shown that it can look great in the right hands, however.

Anyway, needless to say, 3D television adoption rates won't be anywhere near 30% by the time Nintendo releases their next non-portable console, if they ever will be.
