Gun Frontier

Post by dsheinem »

Who has played it?

I spent a good amount of time playing this Taito shmup earlier today...or rather, the game played me.

Seriously, this game is kicking my ass. I am not sure if it is slow on the Taito Legends 2 disc I am using (poor emulation?) or just a slower, tougher shmup all around. But *goddamn* I have been credit feeding the thing and still getting stuck on level 3.

Things I hate about the game:

-Many enemy bullets are the same shape and size as the gold bars you need to pick up to restock your bombs

-Annoyingly placed and infrequent checkpoints - often spawning you in the midst of hell with little chance of surviving

-Bullet Patterns that look like this

^

/ \
* <--you

Wherein you can't escape from inside AT ALL yet frequently get guided to the wide part of the pattern anyway due to the other bullshit going on.

Anyway, of course I intend to give it a few more attempts...but any pointers would be appreciated! (Or am I just fighting a losing cause with a poorly emulated version?)

If I'm understanding that bullet pattern right you pretty much have to stay inside it and avoid any other bs that comes your way till you can escape. I don't know much about the game, but when I get stuck I watch 1cc runs on youtube to get a feel for how they get through the parts I have a tough time with. All those elongated bullets  I hate those things when they pop up occasionally in games, I don't know if I could stand a game full of them.

I found a gameplay video, and you're right. The difference is the gold doesn't move, the bullets do.

Your fault for dying

That's actually pretty standard bullet hell boss faire. Try to focus more on vertical movement instead of horizontal movement when dodging the aimed shots.

Considering it´s age you are being very harsh. You don´t drive an old classic car and curse it for it´s handability do you?
I hugely enjoyed it on Saturn.
Battle Garegga is based on Gun Frontier
Ibara is based on Battle Garegga
This game is a legendary game. What game from that year do you like better?

Offcourse this game has it´s flaws, but it was way ahead of it´s time. Be gentle to this old dog
Regaring the emulation you´d have to ask on Shmups.com
I never heard anything particularly bad about it, but I asume that the Saturn port is much better.

I didn't mean to sound so harsh, as I do appreciate the game's innovation for the time and think it's fairly interesting - otherwise I wouldn't keep going back to it. I actually picked it up because I intend to play BG and Ibara next :D

I know that the upside down V is standard fare, but the problem is that usually there's a way to get out of the V (a small gap somewhere) if you get inside it. Alternately, the V "stops" in most games and you can move elsewhere. Not so in this game - if you get caught inside (which is where they try to force you to go), then you are dead because the point of the V comes down as well. My instincts from other shmups of "the V is safe" keep getting me killed, so I just need to unlearn that.

I don't have an account there, so I thought I'd try here first. That is my main question though - is the frustration I'm encountering a result of the emulation?
