While I could search the forum to see if this has been discussed, it's obvious that it hasn't been for awhile, since these shmup posts seem rather few and far between, so why not start a whole new one?
I recently acquired a PS1 which I'm loving. I picked up one of those nice, little later models (and NTSC-J) for a very small sum of money on eBay, and have spent the past 24 hours playing all that I can. I've been doing the swap trick with some CDrs I made back when I believed Bleemcast was my doorway to PS1 shmups, but after playing some of these, I certainly wouldn't mind owning them if I can find them at a reasonable price.
Enough about me- on to the games. I've been going through this absolutely wonderful guide posted here on RB by BulletMagnet, which has been tremendously helpful.

Thus far I've play Gekioh, Einhander, and as I'm sure you can see by my sig, Harmful Park.
What others do people enjoy? I figure I'll get DoDonPachi for sure, but this catalog of games is so huge, I don't know what else to choose! Lets talk!

I really enjoy G. Darius for this system. It can be picked up for not too much I believe.
Do you prefer vertical or horizontal shmups?

I'm open to either hori or vert.
Though I've really enjoyed Einhander, I'm not a huge fan of the graphics. I guess I'm a sucker for the more 2D graphics, like DonPachi and Gekioh.
I think the Raiden games is what I'll look into next.

I play a lot of Einhander on my PSP. Haven't beaten it yet, so I haven't checked out any of the others. I play DP and DDP on MAME.

That's exactly what I was doing for both of those titles in the past, but recently I've been really turned off from both my computer and my PSP for gaming. There's just something about a standalone console plugged into my tube TV that I just can't resist.Hatta wrote:I play a lot of Einhander on my PSP. Also because it just showed up today and is lots of fun: Harmful Park. If Parodius games appeal to you that is.

There's something about the game- I guess you could call it a cute 'em up, but it's wonderfully strange, especially the second stage. I absolutely love the Frankenstein and pumpkin stem. Love 'em!
