Moving instead of Copying when dragging files to dif HDD
Moving instead of Copying when dragging files to dif HDD
I've got my new harddrive installed but it treats it like a typical external drive/usb/sd card. I'm constantly dragging things from my main drive to my second drive but it makes copies instead of just moving the files. I know I can use right click dragging and select "Move" but it's one extra step, and not really natural since I've got shortcuts to the folders on the drive to make everything flow together. Is there a way to make moving files the standard command when dragging between these two drives? I only want it to happen with my two internal drives, I still want external stuff to just copy like usual. . .

On XP, and likely Vista/W7, once you start dragging, hold shift until you let go of the mouse button. It will move instead of copying. ALT makes shortcuts. CTRL forces copy even if you're in the same folder still.

Ctrl+X Ctrl+V is your friend.

If you have it, middle click and drag works the same as shift+click.

Yes, I tend to use keyboard shortcuts myself, but I figured he was looking for something mousey.MrPopo wrote:Ctrl+X Ctrl+V is your friend.

Seems like that's the best I'll be able to do. I was just hoping to have my second harddrive act like it was sort of an extension of the first in that way. . . I'll just have to get used to it.Hobie-wan wrote:On XP, and likely Vista/W7, once you start dragging, hold shift until you let go of the mouse button. It will move instead of copying. If you create a shortcut to the external drive on the other drive, you might be able to drop and it just moves. Not 100% sure if it will treat it like the same drive then.Jrecee wrote: Seems like that's the best I'll be able to do. This is where I love OS X. Dragging files from an external moves. Dragging to an external copies. Just the way it should do. Pressing the option button reverses the behaviour. Could not be simpler.

Just the way it should do according to apple =PNiode wrote:This is where I love OS X. Dragging files from an external moves. Dragging to an external copies. Just the way it should do. Pressing the option button reverses the behaviour. Could not be simpler.
I think it should copy any time you're moving things between an internal and external or from one external to another. A lot of times I'll put something on a flash drive and want to put it on another computer, but don't necessarily want to move it off the flash drive.
But as far as two internal hdds, it just seems like it should move files.

Yeah that's what I've done and it still copies. I have a folder of work stuff, and within it is a shortcut to my video footage/projects which are on the second drive.Hobie-wan wrote:If you create a shortcut to the external drive on the other drive, you might be able to drop and it just moves.
