Somali Soccer Fans Executed By Islamic Militants For Watching World Cup Match
Gunmen believed to be from a radical Islamic group in northeast Mogadishu, Somalia, shot two people dead during an impromptu raid on a house where people were watching a World Cup match Saturday night, Reuters reports.
A witness told reporters that masked militants "stormed into the house" and open fired at the World Cup viewers, killing two instantly. The militants rounded up about 10 other fans, but left the bodies in the home, the witness said.
The incident came on the heels of a national ban on viewing "un-Islamic" World Cup games made by the local militia group al Shabaab, which controls much of south and central Somalia by force. By al Shabaab's logic, the championship interferes with the group's plan to overthrow the government, because Somali citizens are too preoccupied with the games to fight on their behalf.
Other militant groups have also professed their disapproval of the World Cup.
"Football is an inheritance from the primitive infidels, and we can never accept people to watch it and we are directing a final warning to those who want to watch it," said Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Aros, a spokesman for Hizbul Islam, a group which has reportedly raided homes and detained at least 30 other World Cup fans in Afgoye, about 18 miles south of Mogadishu. He did not specify how the group -- which has also routinely banned music and dancing along with other sports -- intended to enforce the ban.
Thus far, neither of the two groups has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Despite the prohibitions, Somali soccer fans remained undeterred, and residents say they will continue to seek out various ways to skirt the ban, including the use of makeshift satellite dishes. As one Somali told the BBC, "I have one eye on the TV and other on the door, and the sound turned down."

Not sure about wiping them off the Earth, maybe just educate their women and children and "hope" for "change".Incognito D wrote:Watching football = primitive behaviourLuke wrote:...

It's appalling that people are getting murdered for watching a game. A game.
Wouldn't be surprised if people also get murdered for playing video games there. I just hope the sane outweigh the insane over there.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Yes, if you realize that ultimately Somalia understands the world is slated to turn into a post-nuclear apocalyptic wasteland and has simply done its best to stay ahead of the curve by going for it long before the rest of the world catches drift of what's coming. That way, when the world is finally incinerated down to nothing but radioactive rubble, they'll already have their Bartertown ready to go, complete with midget in a cage on a giant's back.
Who rules Somalia?
Master Blaster rules Somalia!

How again has this topic about soccer derailed into discussing fundamentalist oppression and open calls for genocide?
I'd like jfrost's opinion abou Brazil's performance in their first match.

Re: Official World Cup 2010 Thread
It was fucking horrible. Utter disappointment all around. Starting the game with two defensive midfielders against a piss-poor team like North Korea was ridiculous.
No one moved, no one showed up to receive passes. Brazil was watching the game rather than playing it. Luís Fabiano wasn't able to control the ball. Maicon and Elano, who scored the goals, were actually the worst on the pitch. They slowed the game down, always throwing the ball back to the defense. It was actually sad seeing Lúcio run from the defensive field and, when in the attack, finding no one to pass the ball to. And, for fuck's sakes, enough with the heel passes. Really.
Robinho was trying to do something in the beginning, but soon faded out. At least Kaká revived on the second half.
At the press conference after the game the Brazilian press was almost killing Dunga, with good reason. Dude has been an arrogant dick since he got the job, vilifying the press for contesting his all-wise decisions. Well, if this is what he's able to come up with, everyone is absolutely right to want his head (and Brazilians are pissed off, believe me).
Edit: Oh, and this pitiful game is up to now the second in most goals scored. I really wish you guys (the ones who are not normally into soccer) weren't watching this and instead were watching actually fun stuff with technical play - something I still haven't seen in this World Cup.

Re: Official World Cup 2010 Thread
I have to agree with this. All over the internet I see people complaining that the World Cup is boring and they won't watch football again - which is hard to argue with, but the World Cup is kind of the wrong place to start. Plus, I always find watching as a neutral kind of boring anyway. It's much more fun to have a personal interest in any game - i.e. your own team to support.jfrost wrote:

Anyway, where the hell is Ronaldinho? I kept thinking last night that you could have done with his creativity. What was the reaction in Brazil when North Korea scored?

I cheered for Brazil last time but frankly they were disappointing. I don't know whether it's the fault of the coach or the players themselves (too much pressure, lack of teamplay etc)

Dunga had better clean up his act or face the consequences

I'm glad Dunga is leaving his position as head coach of Brazil after the World Cup
