As some of you know I struggled to get the Saturn to a point where it didn't look like garbage on my TV. But I've discovered something new. I play Japanese PS1 games via Japanese PS2, because as you know, US PS2s are still region locked for PS1 and PS2 games. Anyways, I started up Front Mission 2 and when I was playing I realized ... there are two black bars on either side of the screen and the picture is ... off center!
So I decided to test out both PS2s and pay attention to the resolution. Mind you I have component cables hooked up. I noticed that the resolution changes twice when starting up a PS1 game. It changes from 720 x 480i to 720 x 240. Every time there's a resolution change my TV blinks and the sound cuts out for a second. What's really strange about Chrono Cross is the title screen and name selection screen are a different resolution than FMV and gameplay. Other games didn't seem to have the same problem though.
What do you think? Is it partly the way the PS2 deals with PS1 games? This doesn't happen when I play PS1 games on PS3 mind you. Also, PS2 games have very slight black bars but they are centered.
Very strange PS2 issues
Re: Very strange PS2 issues
Someone else will probably be able to help you better, but I thought this was standard fair, as far as the black lines go on both the top and sides of the image for ps1 games. I'm pretty sure I get that on my widescreen tv even with ps1 games on an original ps1 for fmv sequences.

Entire model number and brand TV?
Sounds like your PS2 Component P, B, Y default setting is correct. (Its in the PS2 setup screen)
Agree with winds if TV is a widescreen. TV trying to compensate PS1 native lower resolution 4:3 image. Leaving widescreen turned off will give you the bars. Better that way with a clear unstretched 4:3 image.

Re: Very strange PS2 issues
So it's normal for things to be off center? It's not a big deal, I just thought it was bizarre.
What is bizarre though is the fact that Chrono Cross has in game resolution switches.

lots of games did that actually. Castlevania SOTN is one of them.MerRocher wrote: What is bizarre though is the fact that Chrono Cross has in game resolution switches.
you'd be surprised how many genesis games did it too.
