Re: Xbox 360 joystick on Dreamcast controller

Post by Anthony817 »

Ok, the modder of these controllers on the first and second page went and bought the Dual stick DC controller mod that this guy showed on youtube.

And here it shows how its made.

So what he did here was took the guy's mod in the video, and cleaned it up and added a real DC joystick to it, to make it look more presentable.

Now that he has this controller, he knows how to make them like this, and possibly add true 360 sticks and face buttons to it if he so chooses.

I say great job, and this is the best way to play Quake III Areana via DC controller(Sans the DC mouse & Keyboard), so it feels like a 360 FPS!

And if you are wondering, the right stick is wired to the D-pad, and the actual D-pad buttons are just faked.

He said more pictures are to come when he does his next mod, so stay tuned!

In other words, completely pointless?

Other than those two, no other words are really needed.

Why would you say completly pointless? If you have ever played Gundam Side story 0079, you would know that the controlls suck, and it is VERY hard to play the game, seing as you use the joystick, and the dpad to move around in the game, and this negates the need to hold your left thumb on the top stick, and your right thumb on the left stick to ackwardly move your mech.

In FPS games, like Quake 3, you normaly move via the face buttons, but to me, I would prefer to use the stick on the bottom to be mapped for movement, and the face buttons free to do other things like jumping, selecting next weapon, and crouching or whatnot.

Lol, this may not be your style, but others like this setup. I see it as a very practical option for those that want the convience of mapping the right stick to straifing, and having the left stick for aming or vice versa.

I too really don't get why people would call this pointless??!

This is basically a xbox 360 retro clone! It feels a similar shape to use and play with - (just map the buttons first) it works really well and makes FPS games alot easier and more enjoyable to play!

This is a 'hacks and mods' section - this(in my opinion) is, as already said, a good and valueable mod for several Dreamcast games!

Each to there own etc but how can people come on here and say 'completely pointless' when it clearly isnt!! :?

Pointless comments I think because its not truly analog as in the more you push the stick the faster a character on screen moves. Novel way of making the analog work as a D-pad by (if I heard the choppy video correctly) cutting the rheostat between the two points of a direction on the potentiometer. I can see where the stick might be handy over a D-Pad, but its still on or off only with no "speed" control.

it does work really well though - i can understand why people may think it wouldnt work 100% like an analog stick but it is very accurate - i'm going to do a youtube video later to show that it works well (a better vid than the last guy did)

It doesn't work like an analogue stick though. At all. It's not even close. It's still an analogue stick replacement for a D-pad. It's still only 8 directions on/off. A better mod would be swapping the stick and face buttons around so that it functions more like a modern dual-stick controller. IE Move on the left, and look on the right.

When I'm feeling better and have got half hour spare I'll get a video up to show you that it does work - very much like an analog stick!

(if on a D-pad you constantly hold it down and move your thumb in a circle - your character/ship/whatever will constantly move around - right?

So whats the difference with it being an analog - its constant movement still?!)

As ill show it when i eventually get a video up

The difference is between a maximum of 8 directions and a maximum of 256 possible directions. Your stick is limited to 8 directions, whether you like it or not. Therefore, it's pointless. It's not doing anything more than the face buttons already on the controller.
