Keep in mind that the GBA games can be played on a TV through the Gameboy Player whereas the DS cannot. You also have the option to use any number of controllers on the Player:

Gamecube pad
GBA or SP as a controller
and there's third party adapters that allow you to use NES, SNES, Genesis, even N64 controllers.

I personally love to play Zero with an SNES controller. Seems fitting.

I kick myself all the time for having gotten rid of my original GBA for that very reason. The SP and DS are incredible gaming devices...but they are not the most suited Megaman X controllers.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
