Re: PSP firmware is lame
I think this is simple. Just play Soul Calibur through the patch or pirated version. You can keep the emulators, and the inconvenience exists but is minor. The incentive to buy a legit UMD is to support the developers. You've done that already.Anayo wrote:Here's the bottom line: I can play Soul Calibur if I want to. Anyway...........to run the UMD just install M33 D-3. It runs games up to FW 6.1............
Personally I have 2 PSPs. A 1000 loaded with homebrew and a 3000 for playing PSP games. I like my emulators, but I dont like pirating games on new systems. I guess I just pirate old games.

Re: PSP firmware is lame
I pirate them for convenience (save states, all in one place, super rare) but if they get released on a digital distribution system, and they weren't a success when they first got released, I like to support them and buy them, to show my support for the developers and to send a message that I want a sequel.miked wrote:Anyway...........to run the UMD just install M33 D-3. Done that with oddworld games, and will do it with Megaman Legends if they ever get released on PSN

Thank you. That's the most helpful pointer I've gotten in this topic so far.miked wrote:Anyway...........to run the UMD just install M33 D-3. It runs games up to FW 6.1............

I'm able to independently look stuff up, but a lot of the info on this CFW stuff is scattered and outdated. (Or maybe I'm just not immersed in it enough.) If I find time to try M33 D-3 I'll post here and tell how it went.

If you came here looking for help, then I'm sorry, you posted in the incorrect forum. IF it was help you wanted you should have put your thread in the 'Technical Help' forum. Posting anywhere else will lead to a discussion. Besides, your thread title didn't state a problem. It stated an opinion. Stating an opinion invites open discussion of said opinion.Anayo wrote:Thank you. Just so you know, I'm not attacking you or giving you a warning, I'm just saying that, given the thread title and your opening post, you were opening a discussion on how lame the PSP firmware is. Not a request for help.
That is all.

my thoughts exactly. I had no idea that this thread was meant for anything other than a discussion of whether or not PSP is lame.Niode wrote:

It's cool. I wasn't expecting help and I'm OK if folks have different opinions from me. I can see how it'd look like my "thank you" post indicated otherwise.Niode wrote:If you came here looking for help, then I'm sorry, you posted in the incorrect forum. Re: PSP firmware is lame
This is half true.Niode wrote:With the Wii, the DVD playback was never a feature of the console anyway. Hacks added the functionality to the system via software.
The Wii always had the ability to do this but for whatever reason Nintendo decided not to enable it on consumer consoles. I recall reading something years back about Nintendo not wanting to pay licensing fees so they decided not to allow playback of video DVDs on the console. You could argue that they probably didn't enable it due to concerns over piracy but if that were the case you would think they would have removed it all together.
Anyway I wouldn't say this functionality was "added" it was simply "enabled" by reverse engineering the software that came with the console.
If your interested here is the original announcement of the "exploit": http://hackmii.com/2008/07/dvd-access-l ... -required/
Also this is a good read if your interested in how Nintendo reacts when someone contacts them with a possible exploit: http://hackmii.com/2010/05/of_homebrew_and_antipiracy/
Long story short: They tried to work with Nintendo to stop widespread piracy via softmod but no one from the big N seemed very interested.
BTW I think someone in this thread said something about needing system menu 4.2 to access the shop channel. This is not true, the shop channel can be updated without updating the system menu but it must be done via homebrew software.
To the OP: Headaches like this come a long with running homebrew on any console. Usually stuff like this can be worked around and it seems your in the process of doing that. I recommend spending some time in the larger homebrew communities/forums and staying on top things. Forums tend to have the most up to date information available and I personally prefer them to blogs/websites when it comes to things like this.
I hope you get the game to run from the UMD..I'm sure you will.
