Comparing flash carts with original carts for battery life

Post by gtmtnbiker »

Is there a comparison somewhere that shows the difference in battery life when using an original Nintendo DS or GBA cartridge with a flash cart?

I think a flash cart will consume a bit more power than an original cart but how much?

I noticed when I use my M3 Real with my Micro, that the power indicator sometimes briefly shows red when I use the real time save and goes back to normal when the save is done. This happens when the battery life is on the brink of displaying red.

So for the convenience of having your games on one cart, how much battery life do you sacrifice?

I checked this out before I bought an R4, because I was interested in how flash drives affect battery life as well. I found a few reviews of battery consumption, most seeing about a 30-60 minute degradation from a retail copy to a backup. Also consider battery usage differs from game to game as well. Writing save data to a cartridge--for instance--uses more power than when a game runs normally.

Here is an example of battery life loss- source found at bottom.

Battery Life Results:

Test condition:

* Fully charged European Black Nintendo DS Lite
* R4 DS, Sandisk Ultra II 1GB formatted with FAT32.
* New Super Mario Bros. Running Main Menu and movie looping continuously
* Screens at max. brightness (level 4)
* Sound at 100%

Results:

Backup ROM of New Super Mario Bros. on R4 DS = 4 hours 20 minutes
Retail New Super Mario Bros cart = 4 hours 55 minutes
