crux wrote:Nonetheless, I very much fully support keeping a watchful eye on Google. Their dominance truly is reaching very dangerous levels. It's a difficult company to pinpoint, as everything they do to help the end user also serves to keep those users devoted to Google and their advertisers. If Google had its way, computers and internet would be free for everyone. To the benefit of everyone, or to the benefit of Google? It's almost impossible to see a distinction.
So...why is a company automatically evil when it attempts to make money by aligning its interests with customers or by making sure customers will come back to them because of ease of use, comfortability, etc.? If anything has made the company get so big, it's because people keep using its services, even in the face of other major competitors like Microsoft or former heavyweight Yahoo.

So what has Google done to deserve so much animosity and bile? Because I've made excellent use of their services, and had excellent results. Gmail's space easily trumps the other email services I've used, and the layout is easy to use. I've had more luck with Google than I've had with any other search engine. I haven't tried Chrome yet, but if it's a quality product and I become fed up with Firefox, it's always an option. And Google Wave at least seems interesting. What, are they clubbing baby seals to drill faulty oil wells in the Gulf while treating their old mercenary employees like dirt while they shoot civilian Iraqis? Should I expect them at any time to reclaim all the software I've downloaded via their services while they force out other service providing software by sticking theirs with their OS on their pretentious iproducts while Dick Cheney laughs on their board of directors? Did they manage to bring down the entire financial system with their collapse because they are too big to fail, or were they slaves to union bosses requiring health care services while foreign competitors moved in, forcing billion dollar bailouts of the industry?

Who did I leave out?

to add to the above, if something benefits us, why is it a bad thing then if it benefits them as well?

Google may not be evil, but it's certainly dangerous. What if the government decides to go on a fishing expedition? Who among us hasn't typed something questionable into Google?

Then I'd be more than happy to type in a few more horribly questionable phrases into Google, just to see the government come back to me and ask about why I wanted to know something on "geriatric midge amputees snorting cocaine off Osama bin Laden's ass." And then I'd tell them I searched for all that stuff to fuck with them.

Such a scenario isn't too terribly realistic. It's plain paranoid.

I like Bing more than Google personally, but I rarely search for things.

In Soviet Russia, things search you!

(I can't resist pulling off one of these occasionally)

When I was a kid the possibility of legalized wiretaps without warrants, suspension of habeas corpus, etc, etc would have been considered paranoid. Face it, we live in a world today where it's only reasonable to be paranoid. All they have to do is drop a few key words "narcotics", "terrorism", "child pornography", and your rights are gone.

I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I am so mad at Black & Decker for making a vaccuum that I can't do what I want with.
