What "Great" game did you end up hating?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

That was Sucker Punch actually. I'm a big fan of the Sly Cooper games. I think they were way better than Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter series. And even though I am a Ratchet and Clank fan, I'd still rate the Sly Cooper series higher. Better cast of characters, better dialogue, more gameplay variety and I would argue better graphics too. Plus, I think the Sly Cooper series stayed a little closer to its platformer roots than the other two series did. It also had a lot of cool, retro styled mini-games

Marvel Ultimate Alliance reviewed really well and was hailed as the ultimate comic fan service and it was a complete bore.

Another couple of games I couldn't get into were the Metroid Prime series. I think someone has mentioned this before. Now, don't get me wrong, I like the FPS elements and the Sci-Fi environment, but the aiming is HORRID and the controls aren't layed out too well. One other thing I don't like, is the Scan Visor. Since I'm a completion-ist, and want to get 100 percent of everything, scanning EVERYTHING in sight is necessary. I don't like switching between scan and combat, and I think that scanning should be set to one particular button, instead of not being able to shoot while trying to find the things I need to scan. Just minor gripes, but I just cannot stand it.
Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

Have you played MP3 or the Wiimakes of 1 and 2? The controls and everything else feel much better...

I have played MP3, and though the controls were great, but I'm one of those "let's play the games in chronological order!" type guys. I was waiting for Trilogy to come out, and by the time it did, I couldn't find it ANYWHERE. By the time I did find it, I was out of money, and they discontinued it, I believe.

The DS game is actually really precise with controls, at least I think so. Graphics aren't half bad to boot.

Yup, I really developed an appreciation for the series when I realized that I actually cared about the characters. That's an odd thing to say about a cutesy, mascot styled platform game and amazingly enough, you see some actual CHARACTER GROWTH as the series progresses. I don't typically play these types of platform games for story, but the Sly Cooper actually does a good job in this area

Getting back to my Uncharted 2 rant, I actually liked the game in the early goings. First stage is a sold platforming level, second stage is actually a very well designed stealth section.

Then comes stage 3, where the game devolves into your typical, run of the mill third person shooter and it's as ridiculously unrealistic as most shooters on the market today are with Nathan absorbing bullets like he's some kind of robot rather than a human being, which he has to since, like most shooters today, there's no way in hell to get through the game without getting shot a bunch of times. Ugh, sometimes I really hate the shooter genre. Unfortunatly, much of the game revolves around gunfights and Uncharted 2 really does nothing at all to rise above its peers in this area. So at the end of the day, Uncharted 2 feels mostly like a generic third person shooter, certainly not the kind of game that deserves all the ridiculous, BS hype and acclaim that it got

Does have an interesting take on melee combat though. I did like that

Uncharted 2 certainly did receive a lot of hype, though I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed it. The third-person shooting elements were the standard fare, though I did enjoy the level design. I also liked the plot, though I realize it's as ridiculous as the amount of bullets Drake can take to the face and survive or his upper arm strength.

In the end, I felt the game combined elements of Assassin's Creed, third-person shooter combat, and Kirby Super Star's The Great Cave Offensive.

I had fun with it. It certainly isn't the be all end all that some review sites called it, but I had fun.

I think it's the best game this generation. No, it isn't especially groundbreaking or innovative (did reviews actually claim it moved gaming forward or it that a straw man argument? I'd like to see evidence that reviewers actually argued this...) - it is refined. It has the best third person shooting, platforming, and level design of any action game this generation (and that is a lot of competition!). It is also arguably the best looking game this generation. Those points, along with a better-than-average story for games, are the reasons it got the accolades it did.

The controls are layed out to be more like your average third person action/adventure game than an FPS. That's the one mistake a lot of FPS fans seem to make about the game, they expect to play a first person shooter, when the game really doesn't have much to do with the genre, gameplay wise.

And I loved scanning so much, just all the little tidbits of info about everything, it really sucked me into the game world. I guess I can understand disliking it if you're an obsessive completionist, but I'd hardly say the game's at fault if you found that aspect frustrating.
