Looks like a modernized remake of the first Mortal Kombat movie to me

I don't remember Johnny Cage dying before the tournament.

I like it, gritty with a campy edge to it. Plus little things like Scorpion's canon real name made me smile.
There's not really indication that this is for a new movie though, it could simply be a promo vid for the next game.
Honestly I'm hoping it's a movie, because the game series seriously needs way more than just a visual makeover to be good.

Agreed with these sentiments. Reptile, instead of being one of the last few remaining members of a reptilian race from another realm, is now a psychotic with a skin condition? So basically every cool, interesting and redeeming quality of any character from the game is going to be stripped for the sake of giving us "da bad guyz". Great. Remember when part of you was always rooting for Reptile to turn against Kahn or Shang Tsung and return to his homeland to live amongst the rest of his race in peace? Well fuck it, he's da bad guyz nao!MrPopo wrote:Here's the problem I have. The original Mortal Kombat movie was essentially just the original game, with a few elements taken from MK2. The fighting was fun, you had all your favorite characters in their costumes, and it was overall pretty close to the source. With this one they're trying to make it "realisitic", so instead of Baraka being a guy from Outland where his entire race looks like him he's actually a crazy plastic surgeon.
What?
The only good thing I took from this trailer was that Scorpion is the protagonist. We all know Scorpion is the best character in the series.
Still, I got kind of giddy when I heard the name Hanzo Hasashi. A movie from Scorpion's perspective would just be... oh my god *creams pants*.

If that's the trailer for MK9 then it's a really bad one!AppleQueso wrote:There's not really indication that this is for a new movie though, it could simply be a promo vid for the next game.

Hollywood will never learn.

Same here. I was expecting the person Jax was talking with to turn out to be Lui Kang (naturally) so I thought that was a pretty cool twist.Assman wrote:Still, I got kind of giddy when I heard the name Hanzo Hasashi. A movie from Scorpion's perspective would just be... oh my god *creams pants*.
The MK movies sucked horribly. I always thought the story to the MK games was excellent, especially for a fighting game series. The movies just couldn't get it right. Giving MK a new take like this might not be a bad thing. I like it, as long as the entire movie is as dark and badass as that trailer.
Also, is this real? Or is this just some kind of joke. Is this gonna be an actual movie?
Re: New Mortal Kombat movie
The story for MK fell flat on its face for me as soon as I stopped being a teenager, but I suppose it's heads and shoulders above the rest. Soulcalibur had potential but now it's just an incoherent mess.

I agree with what others have said about how the "realification" doesn't fit the concept very well, I don't like what they did with Reptile (psychopath with a ridiculous skin condition) or Baraka (plastic surgeon? seriously?) at all. I feel like they're only getting it about half right, while the storyless/gritty/violent portion is spot on, I feel like it's missing out on the bright costumes and awesomely ludicrous character design. I could see this going either way, if perhaps the rest of the cast is better handled.
