Have you guys heard of Mayflash? If not, they're a small Chinese company that started up a few years ago making DDR knock off dance mats and console USB converters including the famous Super Joy Box series. Nowadays, their products are actually really quite decent, and more exciting to me, hackable.
Last year, Mayflash released a quarky adapter for the Wii that allows you to plug in NES or Super NES controllers into a Wiimote and use either retro controller in place of the Wii Classic controller. The adapter is around $20 on ebay and is quite easy to find.
The adapter has great build quality and SNES controllers work great, but the NES part has a slight problem: Mayflash installed a DB-9 pin connector instead of the 7-pin US NES connector.
It's actually not all that surprising. For over twenty years, China has been the world's biggest producer of Famiclones, "cloned" (read: illegally copied) Famicom systems. One trait nearly all Famiclones share are DB-9 ports because they could be bought and installed incredibly cheaply as DB-9 was the industry standard in the 80's. Now that Famiclones are completely legal due to patent expiry, there are now even more DB-9 Famicom controllers out there.
Because of this, the overwhelming majority of "NES" or "Famicom" controllers in China are DB-9. Unfortunately, this somewhat limits western gamers who want to get their NES fix on the Wii. As is, you can only use third party Famiclone controllers which are obviously never as good as the real ones.
Unsatisfied, I went to see if I could mod the Mayflash adapter to accept real NES controllers. After some doing, I was able to figure it out.
This tutorial will hopefully fully explain what to do and how to do it.
