Struggling to Keep Collecting
Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
Hmm. I have only been collecting for a year or so, and I up to 176 games with about 7 systems, and i have thought about this. Which is why it is important to have a goal. I mainly focus on the Nintendo 64, I am trying to obtain a full 296 US release collection. Just so I don't track and start hoarding.
But I am sorry for your pain.

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
I am really thinking that this is what I am going to do as well. Just trim my collection down until it's what I like and go from there. It just seems like the best way.Kid Dracula wrote:Dude I am in the EXACT same boat as you. I mean I've been collecting for years but something in me is just telling to not go on anymore. I've been gaming since I was born and will continue to do so but I don't know what's wrong with me. But what I do think is that I tried to collect so many systems and so many games for said systems that I just completely burned myself out. So, what I decided to do was to sell consoles that I don't play or like anymore and just buy games for consoles that I like. For instance, I had an atari jaguar that I didn't give two squirts of piss about because I didn't really like it too much so I JUST sold it. It hurts but it has to be done. I figured that if I just limited my collection to the things that I play and actually like then I really won't burn myself out. Trying to collect for a hoard of systems is really expensive and over bearing. SNES and Genesis is my passion who I will keep these consoles and buy games for them. But I think that anyone with a huge collection of systems will burn him/herself out overtime. It's just too much IMO. But that's just me.
Haha, thankyou. Your sympathy is appreciated!Pichu wrote:Hmm. I have only been collecting for a year or so, and I up to 176 games with about 7 systems, and i have thought about this. I find that if you only collect what you intend to play it makes it a lot easier. I just figure out what games would interest me, and kind of go from there. However, I have bought stuff that I really don't need just because it seemed like it would be cool to own, i.e. the Saturn twin-sticks for Virtual On.

It sounds like the general consensus is "Focus on your favorites". It will be hard since every system seems to have a memory attached, but it is also something that should probably be done. I may keep what I have now though, since I already have it.

Can't take it with you when you croak.
Seriously, buy what you'll play. Like old games, get an XBOX1. Its cheap and will emulate most of what you want really, really well. All except Saturn mostly. Also, it does 480p, 720p and 1080i. Can't beat that.
Good luck

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
I sort stop collecting ps1 and n64 because I have a good amount of games. I'm tired of buying nes games because takes up room even though I probably have 25-33 games. I usually buy games that are good and worth playing. For instance 1 or 2 annoying people who are very young youtube users, have collected or bought games week after week and doesn't even play much of their games. It like these young teenagers have lots of money just purchasing rare games (i.e. this one kid purchased on ebay for a copy of Persona 1 or 2 un-opened paid around $100, instead he is waiting for the psp version).
I don't like buying games anymore instead I rather save my money for now. I always wait for the awesome ps3 games go down in value such RE5 and the batman game. I have lot a of games for a very good reason for owning games: its my secret source for references. I can't tell you why. I sort of want earthbound and sell it for starting bid 0.99. I have never found earthbound except in a glass case at Kmart way back 90s. I do play all my games and finish most of them.
There is one reason that I buy used NES games because my brother had a nintendo in the late 80's about 25 games and my mom ended up giving them away to someone we know. So I thought it would be neat to re-buy every game we played back in the 80's/90's from yard sales.

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
Right now the only consoles I collect for are Xbox/360 Gamecube/wii
Nes/Snes (and genesis, sometimes) Not to say that I don't have other consoles, I just don't buy games for them.

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
I am sick of buying games that just sit there and never get played. Makes me wonder what my intentions really are when I feel that I need to get something. I am seriously thinking of selling everything except my modern games that I play and if I ever want to play an older game I can just fire up an emulator.
Hell, I already sold off 200ish NES games a couple years ago and most of my PS2 and other games not too long ago anyhow.

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
At one time I also had to sell my prized collection. I had Panzer Dragoon Saga, Bonks 3 CD and several others in mint condition (about 630 games total). When the 360 was realeased I started with that and slowly started replacing all my old games and systems.
I still felt a like something was misssing so I changed things up a bit. I bought a beautifull JP Saturn and started getting all my old games back but in JP realeses. That helped a lot. Also I started buying stuff I didn't have before but wanted., such as Steel Battalion and Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw for the PS2. I took an oportunity to avoid some games I had in my collection that I just did not like.
In some ways I still miss the old charm of my first collection. But in other ways my new collection is awsome. Just take baby steps.. Find a console you loved and start collecting with some sort of purpose.

Re: Struggling to Keep Collecting
Ive struggled a little bit myself. WHY do I need to keep this game, when i know for a fact ill probably never play it. I am just holding onto it to say I have it. ooooh look at me, I have a copy of this game that I will never play!
I have whittled my games down a bit. I am thinking, and telling myself, ONLY keep the games that i will accuatly put into the machine and play. I dont have the room for all these games, so why do I think i need more? My collection probably isn't as vast as some here, but I have more then I need. I thought about just getting rid of the phyiscal copies and getting the VC downloads from PSN/Wii when possible. But there is "that I dont accuatly OWN the game and I am only renting it" factor well, if I never play the darn thing. WHO CARES.
I still think collecting games because of there value is a mistake. I think evenually EVERYTHING, wil become downloadable on some kind of virtual console and that the value of these games will sink. So why not just collect games, I love and enjoy and not worry about the value.
I think its time for others to become hoarders and let myself make some room in my house. I am dedicated to keeping games that I accuatly enjoy and play.
