Dylan wrote:I think what you're going through is relatively normal for a collector. Sometimes I too consider just selling of my collection and keeping current with maybe one system, but I always come back to my collection. Usually the way I handle things is to buy when I'm in the mood to increase my collection, and let it lay inactive when I'm just not feeling it. I'll bounce between moods at given times. Perhaps what you need is more of a system of moderation than anything else. I've had to stop myself many times because I wanted to purchase a rare game just because I could find it for about $10 cheaper than its normal price. I think you'll find better satisfaction with your collection if you just take it at a nice, leisurely pace. At least, that's what I try to do.
Sometimes it is hard for me to remember the fact that my last collection was built over years and these days it seems like I keep trying to do it in a matter of, well, days.

I'm starting to feel a little more... "Figured out". Thanks for your comments, everyone. :)

Ever hear a song by Ian Gomm, Hold on to what you got?
So true, kept my 62 chevy since High School.
Just keep a few treasures, don't need an empty room.

At what point does a person shift over from being a collector to being a hoarder. I'm afraid I'm getting dangerously close to that line, at least with videogames anyway.

I really enjoy that song. Kind of reminds me a little of Alan Parson's Project. It applies well, too. Hm.

Based on the TV show about Hoarding, I'd say you cross the line when it starts to endanger your health and someone from the city is at your door :)

I've debated what it might be like to purge a big chunk of my collection before, but decided it would only be worth doing if I did something really fun or memorable with the money instead of spending it on bills or everyday expenses (e.g. take a trip abroad, donate it to a charity, etc.). And no, buying more "stuff" - game related or otherwise - wouldn't count.

This whole discussion, and even the related one, is leading me to think it might be time to trim it and then specialize. I know that, if this comes to pass, I would specialize in Saturn. So if anyone has a complete Guardian Heroes they don't want... :D

But seriously, thanks everyone. And keep your eyes peeled, my Sale thread may get updated with some goodies soon. If I do decide to do this, that is.

My kids will inherit my game collecting OCD. Showed them some price points of various stuff I've collected over the years. At least when I'm gone, a good feeling my efforts won't be in Goodwill. Well at least the valuable ones.

Glad you liked that song, when I blast it in my 62 owned since High School, I just smile. :D

Haha! I read that too and it is so very true! Ever since I found this site I have always felt better about selling to Racket than to eBay. So don't worry, If I do sell it will stay in the community!

Dude I am in the EXACT same boat as you. I mean I've been collecting for years but something in me is just telling to not go on anymore. I've been gaming since I was born and will continue to do so but I don't know what's wrong with me. But what I do think is that I tried to collect so many systems and so many games for said systems that I just completely burned myself out. So, what I decided to do was to sell consoles that I don't play or like anymore and just buy games for consoles that I like. For instance, I had an atari jaguar that I didn't give two squirts of piss about because I didn't really like it too much so I JUST sold it. It hurts but it has to be done. I figured that if I just limited my collection to the things that I play and actually like then I really won't burn myself out. Trying to collect for a hoard of systems is really expensive and over bearing. SNES and Genesis is my passion who I will keep these consoles and buy games for them. But I think that anyone with a huge collection of systems will burn him/herself out overtime. It's just too much IMO. But that's just me. And a way that I look at it is like this, instead of forking out cash for these games and consoles that I really don't like/play and just to have for collection purposes can go to games that I will actually enjoy or just use that money to collect for a system that I like.
