Re: Do you ever feel like you are the character?
after spending a few hours on a racing game at the arcade, i always have to remind myself to slow the hell down on the way home. thats about as close as ive gotten to actually feeling like i am the character.
Re: Do you ever feel like you are the character?
My wife just beat her first Zelda game - maybe her first video game - Ocarina of time. Now we drive around and see stuff that is kind of from the game (our area has a lot of boulders and big rocks around) and she says she is still stuck in the role. She wishes she had her megaton hammer and could go around smashing rocks covering holes that lead to underground cows.
I have the opposite problem with the Metroid games. I have been playing through these games a lot lately and I just can't get immersed in them. I am the type who loves interaction between multiple characters. With the Zelda games, you search and search for upgrades and dungeons, exploring different cities and lands, and it's hard for me not to become part of the story. The developers created a worthwhile reason to go all over the game world, I find myself craving the side quests and the exploration as much as I do beating the game. I actually get sad about beating the game and know there was more to find and want to replay. With Metroid, the only reason to go exploring at all is to get the upgrades you need to defeat the final boss. I still love the Metroid games and the worlds are huge and beautiful, but I can't help but feel the Metroid Universe would be a little safer if Samus were a bit more prepared. She doesn't seem to have a reason to explore, or at least not an exciting one. This is corrected, largely, in Prime, which is the only modern Metroid game I have played. I am playing Super Metroid now and I just can't wait to be done, not because it isn't fun, but because I feel the true aim of the game, for me, is to just beat the boss.

If you find more of the stuff in Metroid, Samus takes off more of her clothes at the end. That was enough motivation to explore back in my day.

I think that it was the faster you beat it the more clothes she takes off.vash23n wrote:Word.J T wrote:If you find more of the stuff in Metroid, Samus takes off more of her clothes at the end. That was enough motivation to explore back in my day.

So back on Topic, hopefully this doesn't happen to the gamer away from the console, say driving to work late.Dylan wrote:I think that it was the faster you beat it the more clothes she takes off.vash23n wrote:Word.J T wrote:If you find more of the stuff in Metroid, Samus takes off more of her clothes at the end. Night Trap.
But seriously, unless the choices are too obvious, any game that *you* are supposed to be the main character. I think a lot of the first person, live action FMV games were meant to be like this.
First person adventure games, such as Myst, come to mind. I felt like I was the one exploring the different worlds.
Any game where you get to see your character and you realize that it's not you, makes for a hard sell to convince me that I am the character.

Metro 2033 really gets you into the character. Not necessarily during the actual conversation scenes (silent protagonist and all) but when you're progressing alone it really sucks you in. Even little details like the sound of your breathing in the gas mask (and the change as the filter starts to run out).
