Anyway, has this ever happened to anyone else, or was I just incredibly lucky/weird?

Destined To Game
Lately, I've been looking back on my early days of video games, and I noticed something interesting. First, I want to say something. When you were really young, do you remember wanting a game really bad, but then buying it, and finding out it was terrible? Most of us have had this experience, but here's where the weird part comes in. This almost never happened to me. Every game I ever bought as a kid is currently regarded as a terrific game, or at the very least, a very good one. I rarely read game magazines as a kid, and when I did, it was either Tips & Tricks or Nintendo Power, both of which used to be known for somewhat sketchy reviews. It's almost like I had a sixth sense for gaming. For example, one time when I was going to a game store, my parents thought I should buy a Spongebob game, but I wasn't convinced. Instead, I bought Dragon Warrior I&II, a game I had never heard of before, but turned out to be one of my favorite games on the GBC, and is regarded as an absolute classic today. This happened all through my childhood, and now, when I think about it, I only remember buying a bad game once or twice, and I returned it very soon after purchase, and I usually bought it in the first place because I didn't have enough money to get a better game that I intended to buy. Another example would be when I had to choose between renting Super Mario RPG or Mario's Time Machine. Guess which one I bought.
Anyway, has this ever happened to anyone else, or was I just incredibly lucky/weird?

Ah I think I Know the answer...
When I was younger I never bought a bad game. But then I played some of those games recently, and I hate them.

I've actually had a similar experience throughout my life. Somehow I always gravitated to first party titles and in general good games, and honestly I have no idea why. Only a very small portion of my collection I consider bad games, and most everything I bought from the SNES to the N64 was out of ignorance. Then again, I think a lot of it might have come from having cousins that played a lot of games, and so whenever I saw what they were playing I would remember it when purchasing games for myself.

...that's why my collection is so small; I pick my games individually instead of buying in lots. That's why I don't play bad games, until I first played Shaq-Fu

(Raises Hand)
Only dud would be Sonic Riders (a game I actually like and think is pretty good - not spectacular, but great fun)

I don't know. I find myself looking at the collection of Genesis games I amassed as a kid, and I mostly think... bleh. I thought a lot of it was awesome as a kid, but now I'm stuck with the fact that some of the games just aren't that good.
For instance, I recently picked up a cheap copy of Taz-Mania off Ebay due to my memory of it as being "fun". Well, it's not so much. It's okay for a while, but once I got to that mine-cart level, I cursed it and put it back in its box. That may very well be the last time it ever gets plugged into a cartridge slot.

I still occasionally play Taz-Mania just to spin around like crazy and watch Taz eat bomb until he dies.Assman wrote:For instance, I recently picked up a cheap copy of Taz-Mania off Ebay due to my memory of it as being "fun". I don't think I bought many games that were terrible. I used to rent games a lot so I typically knew what was decent. I have gone back and bought some games due to memories of them being good. Harley's Humongous Adventure is not good.
