And I'm fairly certain Starcraft is partly to blame for the stagnation in RTS.
Newer than Age of Empires 2 or Command and Conquer
Twas a pretty good game!

Fair enough.
Well what about Supreme Commander 2? I haven't played it, but it seems like it got pretty good reviews.

I can't readily recommend SupComm 2 because not all people are into this "macromanagement" subgenre (btw CoH is all about micromanagement, ie if you don't constantly watch over EVERY unit you're destined to fail)
Steam has a demo of SC2

Not sure what Total Annihilation is, but thanks for pointing out the Supreme Commander 2 demo and sale. I will try out the demo and see where that takes me.

Total Annihilation is the predecessor to Supreme Commander. You should definitely try Company of Heroes, best RTS I've ever played.

Review You might also want to consider World In Conflict: Soviet Assault (or its predecessor: just plain WiC). You don't build bases or gather resources in this series, but it's basically Ground Control set in the 1980s.
