Super Famicom controller cord length..... really?

Post by BocoDragon »

I've known about this for years.. but to see it in person... WOW.

Scored a couple Super Famicom controllers today. As a North American, I love the multicolored all-convex buttons! But THAT CORD LENGTH  It really is DAMN SHORT. I'm barely sitting far from a tiny CRT as it is, and these are far too short for me. Luckily I do already have SNES extension cords.

But I'm curious.. how exactly was this good enough for the Japanese? I know their homes are small, but this is madness. I'd have to sit far too close to the TV for it to make sense. I guess I am curious how the average person played this. Did everyone play sitting at a desk with the console right in front of them? Did they drag their Famicom out onto the floor and sit huddled around it?

I know original Family Computer is the same way... and worse! since the controllers are hardwired in.

It keeps the console close by for when you go bat-$#!+ crazy at the computer and need to turn off/throw/falcon-punch the game..

Bingo!

If you thought the Super Famicom cords were short, you'll LOVE the PC Engine. 8)

I get the sense that early game consoles in Japan were treated like we'd treat a board game such as Monopoly.. You spread all the pieces out over the floor while you play... and when you're done, you box it all up and put it away, under the bed or in a closet.

I do plan on getting an original Famicom someday... so maybe the best solution is to put it on some furniture with wheels so I can drag it right beside me when I play... hmmm.

Indeed, I had to make an extension cable when I got my TG-16.

I use the super famicom controller as my car's rearview mirror dangle.

That's how short the cord is.

Busted out my SNES controller extensions. I never had any need for em.. Bought them at a thrift store years ago.. But now their purpose is clear.

And all just to play with some candy colored buttons! :P I have a strong emotional response to it though.. I remember playing the early "import Super Nintendo" in a mall game store in 1990.. And I haven't touched the same controller in 20 years :P

Being italian and being used to the European Pal version of the snes i find it a LOT more beautiful that the american version. Especially because of the coloured buttons like the famicom version eheh!

I will never understand the hate for the NTSC SNES design. I love those concave X/Y buttons and the purple/grey look :(
