Using an old DS (the first gray one) to backlight NGPC+GBC

Post by Riqz85 »

As the title implies...
I wanted to ask if it is possible to take out the screen light from the 2 old ds screens and solder them to the ngpc and the gbc just like the old GBA SP mod.

If it can be done how bad does it impact the battery life of both systems.

All the help is really appreciated.

Thanks,
Riqz

I think it would not work as the GBA SP screen is smaller and barely fits in the NGPC and it was frontlighted as well which made the transfer easier.

I'm not the most knowledgeable about this but that's what I believe is the case.

I thought only the light would be changed not the whole screen!

I don't even think it would be compatible!

I don't think it's even that difficult as swapping backlights. I think all you need to do is solder in 1 or 2 white LEDs, and it will work just fine. I don't know how do do the mod specifically, but I'm sure there's a tutorial on it.

For the GBC the easiest thing is to use a first-gen GBA SP's frontlight. Here's a tutorial:

Frontlighting can lead to annoying glare on the LCD screen at certain angles. I installed a kit for my G1 GBA, and while it was a fun project, it made it not as fun to play.
